(中央社記者唐佩君新加坡6日專電)新加坡今年歷經2次重要選舉,前內閣資政李光耀憂慮,若政治上分化將改變新加坡,並擔心一旦偏離用人唯賢制度,國家就會退步。

今年5月新加坡大選,執政黨得票率下降,緊接著在8月底的民選總統選舉,曾任副總理的陳慶炎,雖然強調與執政黨無關聯下出來競選,但最後卻險勝,顯示新加坡政治進入新時代。

不過,李光耀對當下政治現象抱持憂慮,據「聯合早報」今天報導,他昨天在一場演講上表示,新加坡自獨立以來可以取得較鄰國更高的人均國內生產毛額(GDP),正是因為整個社會都支持用人唯賢制度。

李光耀認為,將改變新加坡的關鍵是政治上的分化;若國家經常陷於爭吵,如美、英等國一樣,那新加坡就會變成另1個面對同樣問題的普通國家。

他最擔心的是新加坡將來不能再團結一致地提高教育水準,也不再由最有才能的人擔任最好或是最重要的工作

 
US is an ordinary superpower and UK is an ordinary superpower backup. No big deal. Singapore can't be like them. Singapore must be extraordinary minipower. ;)

"Daft" is more like our "gong". It's used in informal language rather than "Oxford English". Oxbridge types usually use words like "asinine" or "vacuous" instead.

i may be wrong, but I kept hearing this daft word being spoken in England...

even the PM spoke it,..

so i thot, its really English English...

hmm...just like when he said "I stand to be corrected.."

why can't he say stupid, dumb...layman english?
