Remember in 1971 the Population of Singapore was less than 3million.

Also tens of thousands maybe hundreds of thousands of Women were "encouraged" and "persuaded" to ligate because they were not educated enough or are from poor families found out too late that when their financial and economic status improved WERE NO MORE able to conceive and produce.
All due to ONE MAN who played GOD on less informed citizens.

Tens of thousands of abortions are a lot better than tens of thousands of useless unwanted babies born to those who are not fit to be parents in the first place.

The importing of foreign talent isn't a result of abortions. It's done in an effort to improve the Singapore gene pool which is of poor quality.

You have to realise that most Sinkies are descendants of peasant stock from Southern China and Southern India while the native population come from generations of simple minded fishermen. Inbreeding within this gene pool has lowered the quality of the subsequent offspring even further. Evidence of this is all over the forum! Just look at the quality of posts, the standard of debate and the atrocious English and you'll see what I mean. Nobody expects perfection but the dismal standards here are a sight to behold!

A fresh injection of genes is needed in order to ensure diversity which is the principle upon which nature draws its strength. That's where foreign talent comes into the picture.

The native population of Singapore is large enough for genetic engineers to have toyed with the (failed) policy of "Graduate Mother Scheme". It's large enough for a U-turn policy of "Have Three or More, If You Can Afford It."

You are focusing on the downside of micro inbreeding or even incest leading to genetic defects whereas expanding the gene pool refers to the upside of higher general level of intelligence and creativity of a nation (of people).

I guess you can argue either way. How small does a gene pool need to be before inbreeding becomes a problem?

I'm just looking at the net result and nobody can deny the fact that native born Singaporeans are exhibiting all the traits of excessive inbreeding. Take item 9 as an example, when SARS struck, Singapore had one of the highest mortality rates in the world despite all the efforts put in to contain the disease. EG Vietnam's death rate from SARS was 8%. Singapore's mortality rate was more than double that figure.

If that is not evidence of a suppressed immune system, I don't know what is.
