SINGAPORE - A 27-year-old driver of a Singapore-registered car is under investigation after he allegedly made an illegal U-turn on the Second Link Highway in Johor, resulting in the death of a motorcyclist.

The incident, which took place at KM0.6 of the expressway on the evening of May 9, occurred after the red Maserati smashed into the metal barrier while making the U-turn at an opening in the road divider.

The impact sent shards of the metal barrier into the opposite lane, triggering a four-vehicle crash.

A 26-year-old motorcyclist died after crashing into the barrier that had dislodged from the road divider, reported Malaysian daily New Straits Times (NST) on May 10.

According to dashcam footage of the crash, which has since gone viral on social media, the car ended in the leftmost lane in the opposite direction, towards Singapore. Moments later, a motorcyclist was seen colliding with the debris

According to the NST report, the motorcyclist died on the spot from severe head and leg injuries.

Several other motorcyclists also fell after hitting the debris but did not appear seriously injured.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan said several road users attacked the Maserati driver with helmets before police arrived at the scene, according to the NST report.

The incident is being investigated under Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing death, as well as Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon, the report added.

A video uploaded on Facebook page SGRV, which has since garnered over 300,000 views, shows several motorcyclists shouting while surrounding the car and hitting it with their helmets. In subsequent images, the car can be seen with a shattered windscreen and a damaged bonnet.

The Second Link Highway, which connects Malaysia and Singapore, is a key artery for cross-border traffic, linking Singapore’s Tuas checkpoint to the Malaysian state of Johor. It spans approximately 2km and serves as one of the main routes for vehicles travelling between the two countries.

The Straits Times has contacted the Malaysian police, Malaysian traffic department and the Singapore police for more information.

PETALING JAYA:The Singaporean driver of the Maserati involved in the fatal accident on the Second Link Expressway in Johor last week has pleaded not guilty in the Johor Bahru magistrates’ court to causing the death of a motorcyclist.

Berita Harian reported that Irshad Abdul Hameed, 27, a civil servant in Singapore, made the plea after the charge against him was read before magistrate Nur Fatin Farid.

He was accused of driving his Maserati dangerously and causing the death of A Vasanthraj, 32, on KM0.6 of the expressway at 6.40pm, May 9.

Irshad was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. The section provides for up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000.

He also faces losing his eligibility to hold or obtain a driving licence for no less than five years from the date of conviction.

Vasanthraj died after crashing into a steel road barrier that Irshad had allegedly ripped out while making an illegal U-turn.

Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said the motorcyclist was confirmed dead at the scene from severe injuries to his head and left leg.

Kumarasan said the driver had crashed into the barrier, ripping it out and placing his car in the way of oncoming traffic.

He said the motorcyclist, who was travelling from the other direction, was unable to avoid the barrier and was flung to the shoulder of the road.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Amirah Tasnim Saleh, while Irshad was represented by lawyers Baharudin Baharim and Zarina Ismail Tom.

The court set bail at RM12,000 with two Malaysian sureties and ordered Irshad to report to a nearby police station once a month and for his driving licence to be suspended.

The court set June 10 for re-mention of the case and submission of documents.
