“Hazrat Maryam (SA) plays a crucial role in the history of divine religions; she was not only the mother of a great prophet but also the Quranic focus on her made her a bridge between Islam and Christianity,” Ayatollah Ahmad Moballeghi said while addressing a conference on interfaith dialogue at the University of Pretoria on Thursday.
“Her character contributes to strengthening solidarity and cooperation between Muslims and Christians,” he added.
In his speech, Ayatollah Moballeghi elaborated on the character of Hazrat Maryam (SA) based on the Quran.
“Hazrat Maryam (SA) serves as a bridge of purity and faith between Islam and Christianity and is regarded as a symbol of chastity and virtue in the world,” he said, adding, “Hazrat Maryam (SA) is recognized as a model of piety and virtue among all women worldwide, and her life is filled with divine signs and miracles that have made her a bridge for bringing Islam and Christianity closer together.”
Hazrat Maryam (SA), holds a “high position” in both Islam and Christianity, stressed the cleric, noting that her name is mentioned 34 times in the Holy Quran, and an entire Surah is dedicated to her, illustrating her noble virtues and merits.
“The life of Hazrat Maryam (SA) is full of divine miracles and signs, including her miraculous conception without human intervention, the divine sustenance provided to her, and the speaking of Jesus (AS) as a newborn, where he testified to his prophecy and the Oneness of God,” he said.
A joint perspective on Hazrat Maryam and Hazrat Fatimah (peace be upon them) within the religious sphere opens new horizons for the proximity between religions, he added.
The conference was co-organized by the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization.
