Romanian Court rejects prosecutors' appeal against Ionescu travel ruling
05:55 AM Feb 16, 2011
SINGAPORE - The Romanian Court has rejected the prosecutors' appeal against the decision to allow former diplomat Silviu Ionescu to travel out of Bucharest, according to Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

An MFA spokesman said in a statement yesterday that it has been informed of the rejection.

The spokesman noted that Ionescu was, however, not allowed to leave Romania. Among other conditions, he was also prohibited from changing his residence without the court's prior approval, from driving a vehicle, and "from approaching and communicating with the injured person, members of his family, witnesses or experts", the MFA spokesman added.

Ionescu is on trial for allegedly causing the death of a pedestrian in Singapore in December 2009. Two other pedestrians were also injured in the alleged accident.

The MFA spokesman said: "We trust that the Romanian authorities will continue to take all the necessary measures to ensure that Dr Ionescu complies strictly with the supplementary obligations imposed by the Court."

The next hearing on the case is scheduled for March 9.

The spokesman added: "We will continue to monitor the proceedings closely. We also continue to expect the Romanian authorities to honour assurances given to the Singapore Government that justice will be done."
