The New York Times reported that Houthi rebels in Yemen narrowly avoided striking U.S. F-16 and F-35 fighter jets during the initial stages of Operation Rough Rider, a U.S. military campaign targeting Houthi forces. Notably, Houthi air defenses came close to hitting multiple F-16s and at least one F-35 within the first 30 days of the operation, casting doubts on the effectiveness of U.S. air superiority in Yemen.

The F-16 and F-35 fighter jets took off from both the USS Harry S. Truman and the USS Carl Vinson as part of Operation Rough Ride. It has been confirmed that two or three F-18 jets experienced difficulties and were lost at sea.
