Law Minister Shanmugan was just quoted that people should not be distracted by “Internet chatter” and that they can decide what the real issues are.. Well times have changed – Internet chatter IS becoming public opinion. It’s no longer just coffeeshop talk limited to social circles that do not mix with each other.

The big problem is that when public opinion is shaped by ill-informed ideas or emotional outbursts, there’s no other alternative in reshaping it since mainstream media’s coverage/commentary will be late by a day or two. What scares me is the level of xenophobia or anti-establishment sentiments that I see on the FB postings of younger friends.

The bigger problem, which most people don’t seem to realize, is that most of the “Internet chatter” on Facebook is actually kept from public view. It’s simply not possible to search and do a statistical study of the comments that are being posted in thousands of private FB comment threads (unlike Twitter, where it appears most tweets are in the public domain). It is also not possible for PAP or any other institution to befriend everyone on FB. So even if trouble is brewing within the FB community, it won’t surface till it reaches critical mass.

right and as good citizens, we should be lapping it up from the CSM????

Just like how last night during the BE "reporting" by the CNA etc, these so called sources were misleading the people of singapore that PAP was "leading" all the way and giving the impression that PAP was going to win when in truth, the PAP was shitting bricks, getting recounts (even though the percentage won by the WP was clearly more than 10%) and already knew that their "ministerial" calibre ship was sunk and at the bottom of the ocean by 10 pm ....

if the mass media spends less time misleading and crafting their version of events in accordance with their one sided ways, maybe the people of Singapore do not have to rely on internet chatter. Strangely enough, the "distracting" internet chatter happens to contain a whole shipload of truth and facts than any of the so called mass media avenues which are advocated by the PAP.

Ironically, the only distracting internet chatter happen to be spouted by the usual PAP PLP IBs like Mulew, Kinana and Clinton666 and the ilk....

The real reason why internet chatter has taken the place over their SPH media outlet channel is simply these so called official channels, have so skewed every aspect of reporting in regard to local affairs that this delusion Ah Neh still think the daft Sinkie have not figured out.

Reading reports from their sources, leave readers coming to the conclusion, as always being reported 1+1 is not equal to 2.

While the internet chatter tells the Sinkie bluntly 1+1 is indeed equals to 2 unless their Pappy Master has completely re-written the laws regarding mathematical addition for their own purpose!

Bravo. No need for Arab Spring here in Singapore but an Orchid Revolution would do just as nice! Haha! Power to the people!

Internet chatter is not public opinion, but it's certainly one of the major influences.
There are still people whose vote or political opinion are not influenced by what they read over the internet.

Shame-mugan is still delusional. Even the US president is using internet to his advantage.
