KUALA LUMPUR: An interior designer was jailed nine months for having an image of the Islamic State (IS) militant group's flag in his handphone.

On Tuesday, High Court judge Justice Mohd Azman Husin meted out the sentence against Azlee Md Salleh after he pleaded guilty to the charge, which he committed at a house in Taman Ira, Kangar, Perlis, on Aug 19 this year at about 8.30am.

Justice Mohd Azman ordered the sentence to run from Aug 19, the day he was nabbed.

Azlee, 30, was charged under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code for possessing items associated with terrorist groups or terrorist acts.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence against the accused.

Azlee's counsel Dinesh Muthal, in asking for leniency, said his client regretted for what he had done and was scheduled to marry his fiancee on Oct 19.

Dinesh urged the court to sentence his client from the day he was arrested.

According to the statement of facts, Azlee was a diploma holder from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Perak and had communicated with several Malaysians who were fighting in the IS group in Syria including Zulqarnain Ghaz.

The accused also had the knowledge that Zulqarnain was shot in Syria and returned to the country last year. The accused was also told by Zulqarnain that he was wanted by the police.

On Aug 19, Azlee was detained and after his handphone was analysed, it was confirmed that it contained an image related to IS group's flag.
