BE VERY CAREFUL ON TRAVELATORS ,BEST NOT TO STAY TOO CLOSE TO OTHER PASSENGERS WITH TROLLEYS.
Was on Parkway Parade travelator with my daughter after shopping at NTUC when the trolley wheels jam stopped at the 4th floor landing before toppling over . The trolley fell flat across the width of the travelator and my daughter’s right foot was trapped in between the two metal side bars . I landed on the trolley , picked myself up immediately to try lifting my daughter up who was now in great pain . We were unable to free her knee/thigh caught between the metal bars of the trolley while the travelator was still moving , almost causing a stampede from other passengers behind us . Fortunately the commotion attracted the attention of a couple who came to help us , meanwhile , someone stopped the travelator. This kind gentleman was making a big effort to pull the welded aluminium bars apart to free my daughter’s leg but it was an impossible task . Somehow she managed to slip her leg out of the trolley bars when the travelator stopped and we managed to move the trolley sideways giving room for her leg to be freed . It was a very frightening experience although we tried to stay calm .
I took her to the landing near the check-in entrance to tidy up and noticed there was swelling on her palm with blood stains on her arm, and blue black marks on her knee cap too! I also felt a sharp pain on my back down to the right calf and had difficulties in walking upright. Then it struck on me to call for the duty manager of Parkway Parade . The check-in counter lady officer called the security office and a few of them attended to us instead .They took statement and asked if we wanted an ambulance which we declined .
When i was walking towards the carpark , i felt the sharp pain getting more pronounced that prompted me to consult the doctor at A & E of Parkshore Hospital . I had severe pain in my lower back and the doctor sent us for Xray after examining our conditions . We spent more than 3 hours before reaching home at 12.30am. Was a scary accident using the travelator with this trolley which is not designed for that purpose . The wheels are not magnetic / with grooves that will lodge into the travelator guide rails to prevent them from free spinning .
When i sit back to review the accident I felt blessed that we survived with not so “obvious permanent injuries” compared to some other escalator accidents that even claimed lives and limbs ! We thank God for His guidance and blessings.
WHEN we submitted our medical claims to Parkway Parade shopping center , we received a letter from their insurer denying it’s their fault . The insurers simply said they travellators are functioning well and there are no faults with them , thus they cannot accede to process our claims of slightly above S$1,000 from Parkshore Hospital. Would greatly appreciate if someone in this forum can offer advice . Thank you.
