Remember the Indian dude who was caught supplying cocaine and even Cheryl Fox was implicated? He was the son of a judge. He was featured a few months later selling super cars on the Straits Times.

Name one case where a rich man had to go jail... Sure have but hard to figure out right? Very rare mah....

This Indian dude dad was a retired judge & the mum is well known also & was vocal in AWARE!!...

"And here's a song to sing,
For every man inside
If he can hear you sing
It's an open door.
There's not a rich man there
Who couldn't pay his way
And buy the freedom that's a high price
For the poor."
(abridged from Graham Nash "Prison Song", Wild Tales Album)

To: Your Honour, Prof Walter Woon, Attorney-General of Singapore
(1) Today is our 43rd National Day. While we are celebrating the progress and the success stories of our beloved country Singapore, may we take a moment to remember and pray for those beloved fellow Singaporeans who are falling behind the race and those who have fallen severely ill, desperately hoping for a cure.

(2) Please permit us to highlight the following case reported on July 11, 2008 in The Straits Times:

“Singapore’s first illegal organ transplant cases were exposed on May 29, 2008 when the health ministry learnt that blood samples from various foreign nationals had been sent here to cross-match against the blood sample of a Singaporean.

Two Indonesian men were arrested and later plead guilty in court in June this year. One Singaporean, Mr. Tang Wee Sung, faces three charges. He allegedly planned to pay Wang Chin Sing $300,000 for a kidney. He was also accused of lying in a statutory declaration and to a transplant ethics committee that he had not paid for the kidney.

According to the law of Singapore, Mr. Tang Wee Sung may be jailed and fined for his offences.”

(3) On this significant day, we wish to petition to Your Honour, the Attorney-General and the respected government of Singapore to consider the following points and to withdraw the 3 charges against Mr. Tang Wee Sung:

1. Compassion - Mr. Tang Wee Sung is a severely ill patient. According to reports, both his kidneys have failed and he is required to receive dialysis treatment six times a week.

2. Human Rights – Survival is the most basic human rights of all human beings. Suffering from severe illness, Mr. Tang Wee Sung was merely fighting to survive. One may argue the he is exploiting the poor. However, it has been shown clearly in this case that it was the middleman who was exploiting the poor. According to reports, the middleman intended to pay a mere $23,700 to the donor and to pocket a large sum of $300,000 through the transaction.

3. Contribution – CK Tang is a well known retail landmark in Singapore. Since 1932, it has contributed greatly to Singapore’s tourism and retail industry.

Being Singaporean, we are very proud of our beloved country. We fully respect the law and order of Singapore as they are the foundations of our progress and prosperity. However, there is a Chinese saying “Guo Fa Zhi Wai, Shang You Ren Qing” – which means that besides from upholding the law and order, sometimes, there may be exceptional cases where compassionate reasons could be taken into considerations.

We are a group of students and alumni from NUS and NTU. We are of no relation to Mr. Tang Wee Sung. However, being fellow Singaporeans, we are concerned about the debates of this case and his health.

It is heart wrenching to imagine a severely ill patient being jailed. Therefore, on the ground of compassion, we sincerely plead to Your Honour, the Attorney General, and our respected government for leniency and to consider withdrawing the three charges against Mr. Tang Wee Sung.

Best wishes to all.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

If not for the dad, you think this guy stand a chance building CK Tang?

It is not uncommon that courts prefer to "fine" the accused, regardless they are rich, or not. Simply put there are hidden cost if the accused were to be jailed -- such as upkeep of the accused in Prisons.

This practice was even more evident the first few years after our independence. The court registrars will try their best not to give nil returns at the end of the day because MoF will question.

heard from a reliable source that singapore judge will sentence only fine to those who are rich ( if there is a jail term for his crime , those rich usually serve the min jail term if they willing to pay the fine ) ...they even have a chamber to discuss whether they want to pay fine before the actucal sentence ....:D

i guess singapore goverment is hungry because Temasek have been losing money and trying every means to get it back from singaporean and FT ..
