2 solar panels in the Hebron hills alongside tents of a Palestinian village are vital as they provide electricity as Palestinian communities of the West Bank controlled by Israel are not connected to the national grid.
To Israelis, these solar panels – also in nearby villages – are illegal and slated for demolition.
Nihad Moor and her family live in a tent uses a small electric butter churn to supplement her husband’s small income from sheep farming.
“The kids get sick all the time and without electricity I wouldn’t even be able to see to help them when they need to use the [outdoor] toilet at night, I can't imagine what life would be like here if [the panels] were demolished.”
The solar panels were built by Spanish NGO Seba at a cost of €30,000 to the Spanish government but to the Israeli authorities, it was built without a permit.
For Palestinian communities, permits to build any infrastructure is very hard to come by. According to figures, 91 permits were issued for Palestinian construction from 2001-2007 while over 10,000 Israeli settlement units were built and 1,663 Palestinian structures demolished.
Most Palestinian villages are cut off from water and sewage services while Israelis ordered demolition of toilets and water cisterns.
