Operator SMRT will increase the pay of its bus drivers.

In a news release on Monday, SMRT said its latest enhanced salary package will raise the basic salaries of all its Singaporean, permanent resident and foreign bus drivers.

SMRT had increased the salaries of its drivers by a range of $75 to $250 in July, but also adjusted their work week from five to six days.

Taking into account this latest salary enhancement, Singaporean bus drivers will see their pay go up by up to $400. PR and foreign drivers will see their pay increase by up to $175.

For $75 increment a month, with 4 additional days, that works out to only $2.3 / hr.

For $250 increment a month, with 4 additional days, that works out to only $7.8 / hr.

Looks like a decrement in the monthly pay for SMRT bus drivers back in July, rather than increment. The 'salary enhancement' is probably to equalise it to neutral rather than increment.

Let's see... that works out to be an extra $400 for 4 extra days of work in a month. $100 per day.

And a bus driver definitely works more than 8 hours a day.

Worth it? I'll let you decide.

Pay raise is a history for SMRT drivers. There is a latest report from a private staffing firm Wednesday predicted that you might be finding a pay raise next year. That is, if you work in technology, finance or administration. But it is for the private sector only. Government employees are doomed.
