Aleksandra Kąkol, a Polish pediatrician and content creator known online as “pediatryczka_ola,” died on March 13, just over three years after she was diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She was 34.
“Today, we bade farewell to Ola—our beloved daughter, sister, and wife,” read a tribute uploaded to her Instagram account, where she had over 36,000 followers, on March 19. “She departed without pain, in peace, surrounded by the love of those closest to her.”
According to her website, Kąkol was 31 when she was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, an extremely aggressive form of cancer that forms in the tubes between the liver and the small intestine. When she received her diagnosis, in February 2023, she was given three months to live.
“Healthy, young, fit, with no symptoms? This has got to be some kind of joke,” she wrote. “No one was joking. I was dying. There was no hope, no salvation.”
Kąkol underwent a series of procedures to treat the cancer, including a liver transplant — far surpassing the life expectancy initially given to her by doctors. And two years after her diagnosis, she chronicled her story in a self-published memoir, titled Look, I'm Still Alive.
