coon Liem Sioe Liong, who founded the Salim Group and ranked among South-east Asia's richest man, died yesterday afternoon in Singapore at the Raffles Hospital. He was 96.

Born in China, Mr Liem was the second son of a farmer who went on to build a powerful business conglomerate spanning units like Indocement and Indofood, and became a close ally to former Indonesian President Suharto. He began his business by peddling coffee powder before he got his big break as a supplier of cloves. Mr Liem then expanded into textiles, followed by rubber and eventually became among the biggest supplier of cement and flour in the region.

Mr Liem, who was also known by his Indonesian name Sudono Salim, was head of the Salim Group until 1992, when he handed the reins of the company to his son Anthony Salim.

By 1997, the Salim Group had US$20 billion (S$ 25.7 billion) in assets and some 500 companies.

In 1998, during the riots in Indonesia that led to the resignation of Mr Suharto, a mob burned Mr Liem's Medan home and he fled to Singapore.

In 2005, he was named by Forbes magazine as South-east Asia's 23rd richest man with a net worth of US$750 million dollars.

That year, he marked his 90th birthday in Singapore with a lavish two-day bash for 2,000 guests at the Shangri-La Hotel, which was estimated to cost more than S$2 million.

Both rich man look alike, Liem Sioe Liong & Wee Cho Yaw.

When you reach that age all men look alike: bald, bad complexion, sagging chin,.... just have to take a look at LKY.

I just hope we don't have to wait until LKY is almost 100 before we can uncork the bubbly

A result of too much rich food... bald, bad complexion, sagging chin. LKY too. His time is coming soon.

Actually I hope that he would live past 100 to see his "handiwork" unravel and disintegrate. Whether the old man lives to show remorse or tears for the sufferings and hardships caused to sinkies, only he can appreciate.

Because of tycoons like him indonesia ended up in deep shit.

He was one of the guys whom depleted indonesia banks and cause the collapse of rupiah.

Read Asian Godfathers. The book.

Si bei a lot in one night???:*:

These Indonesia billionaires and millionaires are the builders of Singapore. Without their corrupt funds, Singapore wouldn't have become the rich metropolis it is today.

If LKY dies at the age of 96:

1923+96=2019

7 more years to go!

did u really read the book, or are u bullshitting here? People like Liem sioe liong cannot become as rich as they are without the connivance and co-operation of the generals. if you are looking for why indonesia is in trouble, u are looking in the wrong place. The richest industries like oil and gas are not controlled by the chinese tycoons, but are state run. u ever ask yourself why these industries produce $billions a year in income to the state, and yet all the money never get to the people? tycoons did not do it.

From peak of US$20 billion fortune now left with US$750million.
Though still rich by any stretch of imagination but knn he and his family must really be Pui Chow Nua at the depletion.

20 billion = Salim group fortunes
750 million = Personal fortunes

That's right. Not only generals but the right politicians as well.

Same goes in M'sia. Without the support of the right politicians, one cannot become super rich. Sugar king, Vincent Tan and Tony Fernandez are examples.

Me bad din read properly.
But being once the richest indo and also richest chinese in all of south east asia I figured he would be left with more....at least the odd billion.

cheap by comparison. they do it all the time. and the magnate families in south east asia are almost always invited to private lavish galas in hk. average tab per gala in hk is $3m. in one, the host booked the entire 6-star hotel and turned the largest ballroom into an ice palace, complete with skating waitresses and waiters serving sushi on ice trays. that was the adult gala. for their kids, a 5-star hotel was booked, and the theme was "leather".
