Singapore being flooded by foreign Indian
nationals like YPAP leader Sinha Shekhar
July 20th, 2010 | Author: Your Correspondent
Singapore is being flooded by Indian nationals who now number more than 400,000 in Singapore, according to the Indian Embassy.
Bernard Menon from Migrant Workers’ Centre told the Straits Times that while the majority of the Indians are work permit holders, a rising number are “professionals”.
An increasing number of Indians are employed in the IT, engineering and finance industries, competing directly for limited jobs which can otherwise be taken up by Singaporeans.
Indian nationals are highly sought after by companies here as they can speak English, cost less than a Singapore worker and have no reservist obligations. Many of them are given Singapore PRs and citizenships by the PAP.
The state media reported last year of a Singapore-born Indian who expressed his dismay that his daughter is the only Singaporean in her class – the others are children of expatriates from India.
The PAP has been actively recruiting the Indian new citizens into its ranks, some of whom are now prominent leaders of its Youth Wing such as Mr Sinha Shekhar.
A speech therapist by training, Mr Sinha Shekhar obtained his Singapore citizenship in 1994 at 25 years of age. He joined the PAP four years later, rising fast high up its rank to become its unofficial spokesperson in cyberspace. He is currently the Head of Rehabilitation at Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital.
Mr Sinha Shekhar is notorious in Singapore blogosphere for his description of PAP critics as “dogs” on the YPAP Facebook in March this year. Ironically, he was later given an “Outstanding Contributors’ award” by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in person for the regularity of his contributions on the PAP REACH Forum and Facebook.
