Sunday light banter.

Came back last week from a business trip and while I was there was talking to 2 Ang Mos over dinner. The discussions was on Singapore and Singaporeans and lore and behold, an Indian family entered the restaurant and guess what? the same thing with the kids running around. As they sat close by, we could not help overhearing their conversation with the waiter. Detailed questions about the dishes, including "is the orange juice freshly squeezed".

One of the guys must have sensed something in me and began asking about their culture. At first I was taken aback why he was asking about Indians and I recall mentioning that Singaporeans were made up of Indians amongst other races. I explained that our Indians are so different.

Then he asked me something about the Chinese that floored me. He told me that he always noticed that young Chinese adults will come as a couple or as a group of friends to restaurants but he has never ever seen a Chinese family with kids in a restaurant ever. He asked me why and I was stumped. The other Ang Mo chipped in and said the same thing.

They also said that the Chinese families tend to keep to themselves and he said that they tend to be indoors and introvert. When I asked how come there so many TV journalists and broadcasters that are Chinese in the US and again a comment that stumped me - "they are Americans"

Then we went to the topic of the Indians and the comments were about the subservient behaviour of the wives in the presence of the husband - husband walks in front, sits down first, wife carries the shopping etc.

As I was leaving a few days later I tried to recollect if I noticed any Chinese families in an overseas restaurant apart from a Chinese restaurant and I have to say that I have not. I wonder why. Here is another observation that I found curious. When one is in an airline lounge, there will always be some families with kids from nearly all the races including Indians but I have not seen a single Chinese family. And I have been travelling for quite a while.

Go figure or any ideas.

Maybe the Chinese are courteous enough to not being their brats (and pets) into a restaurant.

If you want to run around, go to McDonald's. Stay away from that hotel buffet restaurant.

Now which group would u rather have visit the restaurant? Shit skins with their brats or courteous Chinese that have the decency and manners not to bring kids and I bet their kids are 1000x more well behaved than shit skin kids.

This has also struck me. Notice how scroo and probably others are slow to condemn or don't do squat at all cos the ppl misbehaving are not Chinese. Now lets change things up suppose it was the Chinese that were bringing in their kids And making a din and asking stupid questions suffice to say we would all know the outcome statements like Chinese are ill behaved Chinese are barbarians or something all those lines would have been mentioned but is because this time the offenders are shit skins and not Chinese in fact from scroo's account all the offenders are skins so not even a single word to condemn the skins fucked up behavior isn't this the perfect example of somehow people need to tolerate shit skins fucked up behavior.

I asked a colleague and he told me that Chinese in a family gathering will always go to Chinese restaurant as the eating style is communal (shared dishes) and the cuisines have so much variety that you will never exhaust the list. There is always some Buddha jumping something dish.

I then realised that even for us when the extended families are involved, Chinese restaurants are the automatic pick.

Strange.

I noticed this particularly poor boorish behavior thing, that I never noticed while in India. Anywhere you go, the next time you hear extremely loud and ear piercing screeching, wailing or screaming, try to guess what kids are they first and only then turn around and find out.

Almost always you will find them to be foreign Indian children. AND the parents seem oblivious to them and leaving them to continue....... Is this the reason they turn out to be obnoxious adults? As the Malays will call it "kurang ajar"..

Why buffet is not a cosy place for a Chinese family gathering? Unless you want to avoid certain class of people. I suppose the Koreans and the Japanese are the same too. You hardly see them in our malls too.

The Koreans and Japanese have to get native products for their weekend grocery shopping... things which cannot be found in NTUC Fairprice, Cold Storage or Sheng Siong.

Koreans hang out at Novena. Japanese hang out at Liang Court or Isetan Orchard.

Actually don't you feel that koreans and japs tend to blend in since they look chinese? I mean if they didn't speak most ppl would assume they come from china or are local.

What u mean u have not seen any Chinese families in restaurants overseas? I see that quite often. Maybe u r referring to those snotty fine dining that do not allow kids!!

Agree.. These brats are like Mini Maharajahs.. Their parents would sit down on a bench and engage in the latest gossips while allowing their young kids to run wild at the playground shouting at the top of their voices..

This happened many times at a playground near to my parent's block.. Their curry carnival would start at 7pm and ends when the playground lights are off at 11pm.. These little Pundeks would colonized the playground preventing the local kids from playing there..

I had to stop bringing my dog for walk there as even my dog was afraid of the loud shoutings from these little Ah neh rascals..

Seriously, after the conversation, I cannot recall ever seeing a complete Chinese family in an overseas restaurant that is not chinese, fast food or a deli. Not once. Also after someone mentioned it, the same with other East Asians

i however have seen chinese tour groups with families in restaurants and I also recall in some cases their atrocious conduct at the buffet bar. Once I saw 2 Koreans ladies packing fruits in plastics and putting it in their handbags.

Anyone seen chinese families in airline business lounges overseas? The mystery deepens.

Some observations from me:

1. I have observed Chinese families in an overseas non-chinese restaurant many times, so would have to disagree with this observation.

2. Very few chinese families in airline lounges could be true. My take is that chinese families tend to fly economy on holiday. Even if father or mother has airline lounge access, he or she may not bring in his family for various reasons. One of them could be below.

3. Indian parents tend to think that they are reflection on their children. i.e. if they can eat in a restaurant or be in an airline lounge, the reflection of themselves have the right to run around.
Chinese parents tend to think that their children are reflections on themselves. They are embarrassed when the children run around because it reflects on them.

4. The "culture" of not being able to say "sorry, please, thank you, excuse me", treating service providers haughtily, having children run around, being picky and condescending, seems to be more from the culture in the country, possibly stemming from the caste system and the way life and business are conducted.
Not so obvious and prevalent from Singaporean or Malaysian Indians or those who have lived in, say USA or Europe, for years.

The Chinese consider time spent in airport to be wasted time, and they would squeeze out the last minute for shopping. If they check in early, they can be spotted in the luxury product shops like fendi and Chanel. Why sit in airport lounge when you will be spending the coming hours sitting and eating inside the airplane?

Brilliant Bro, I think you might have the answer. It does makes sense.

APNN are rubbish which belong to their sump in APNN land.... Period

It is easier to have children misbehave in a Chinese restaurant than a non-Chinese one, and for adults, non-Chinese resturants have such formidable menus that challenge their comprehension, or cutlery layout that is absolutely difficult to remember in sequence and highly embarrassing to make a mistake over.

You can see this in HK restaurants where it is always noisy, slurping is common, you are not traumatised by the vulture-like waiting staff in your peripheral vision or line of sight as in a Western setting, and where you have to scream yr head off to get any waiter's attention instead of having some liveried staff fawning on you at the slightest nod or grimace.

But Indians are thick skinned and adults have that special art of being numb in the ears so that screaming children is never a problem. Excuse me? Children shouting? Oh they are just playing... And they have always tried to emulate the sahibs or memsahibs since the days of the Raj, to be able to play cricket, sit by the pool, waited upon like a king by the natives...
