The number of imported cases have increased since 30 December.
29 Dec - 13 cases. All imported.
30 Dec - 27 cases. 26 imported, 1 community case.

Some of them are placed on stay-home notice.
Most of the imported cases are from the Indian sub-continent (India, Bangladesh) and Indonesia.
It is naive to assume that all of them will comply with the stay-home notice (SHN).
The Ministry of Health is not checking on them all the time.
It only takes 1 or 2 to breach the SHN without being caught to spread the covid-19 virus to the local community.
It is only a matter of time.

SINGAPORE - There were 27 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Wednesday noon (Dec 30), taking Singapore's total to 58,569.

There were 26 imported cases and 25 of them were placed on stay-home notice or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

The remaining imported case was a pilot with Singapore Airlines who had tested negative for Covid-19 on return to Singapore but developed symptoms later.

Among the imported cases, seven are Singaporeans or permanent residents and six are foreign domestic workers.

There was one new community case and none from worker's dormitories.

On Tuesday, MOH reported that the part-time Grab driver who was the sole Covid-19 community case on Monday had been temporarily suspended from the Grab platform, in line with the ride-hailing operator's safety precaution measures.

Grab said in a statement on Tuesday that it is working with MOH to provide all necessary information on the man - who also works as a Singapore Airlines cabin crew member - for contact tracing purposes.

It added that to ensure higher safety and hygiene standards, all its drivers have access to free sanitiser and disinfectant at the Grab Driver Centre. After every ride, Grab drivers and passengers can provide feedback or report on any health and hygiene-related concerns.

Meanwhile, a 48-year-old Singaporean man who returned from Indonesia was one of 13 coronavirus cases announced on Tuesday.

All the coronavirus cases announced on Tuesday were imported, and comprised one Singaporean, two permanent residents, nine work permit holders and one short-term visit pass holder.

A 71-year-old female permanent resident had returned from the United States. The other cases returned from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

All the imported cases had been placed on stay-home notice or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said MOH.

There were no new community cases and none from worker's dormitories on Tuesday.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained low, with just one currently unlinked case in the past week.
Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died of other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December last year, has infected more than 81.9 million people. More than 1.79 million people have died.

29 Dec - 13 cases. All imported.
30 Dec - 27 cases. 26 imported, 1 community case.
31 Dec - 30 cases. 25 imported, 5 community cases. Highest daily total since 21 Sep (31 cases).

SINGAPORE - The Government is reviewing precautionary measures for workers in the marine sector after five new community Covid-19 patients linked to the sector were announced on Thursday (Dec 31).

In a statement, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said it is “aggressively tracing and testing the close contacts of the community cases so as to ringfence these cases and prevent further transmission”.

Among the five community cases is a family cluster of three involving a harbour pilot, identified as Case 58,817, who was found to be positive for Covid-19 through rostered routine testing.

The other two cases from the community are family members of Case 58,810, a permanent resident who works as a marine surveyor at Lloyd’s Register Singapore.

His infection was announced on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old marine surveyor’s work entails working onboard vessels docked at Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard.

MOH said it will commence special testing operations to test people who had boarded the ships that Cases 58,810 and 58,817 recently worked on.

It will also test harbour pilots, marine surveyors and ship repair workers in the coming days, regardless of their rostered routine testing schedule, to determine their Covid-19 status.

“In view of the recent cases involving the marine sector, we will review the need to tighten our precautionary measures for these workers,” said the ministry.
The review of precautionary measures for workers in the marine sector comes after the authorities tightened safety measures for airline crew, following news that a Singapore Airlines cabin crew member and a pilot had tested positive for Covid-19.

The five cases in the community announced on Thursday is the highest daily community figure since Aug 30, when there were eight cases.

There were also 25 new imported coronavirus cases were confirmed on Thursday.

This means there were 30 new cases on Thursday, the highest daily total since Sept 21, when there were 31 cases.

Thursday’s new cases take Singapore’s total to 58,599.

The 25 were placed on stay-home notices or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said MOH.

Among them, five are Singaporeans or permanent residents, and nine are foreign domestic workers.

No new cases from worker’s dormitories were announced on Thursday.

More details will be provided by the ministry on Thursday night.

On Wednesday, a Singapore Airlines (SIA) pilot and a work pass holder preliminarily tested positive for the new B117 strain of the coronavirus that is circulating in the United Kingdom.

The new B117 strain is reportedly 70 per cent more contagious, but has not shown signs of being more lethal or severe.

The pilot, a 40-year-old Singaporean man, had travelled to the United Kingdom for work between Dec 19 and 22, said MOH on Wednesday.

Although he tested negative for Covid-19 on returning to Singapore, he developed a fever last Saturday and sought medical treatment at a general practitioner clinic the next day, where he was swabbed and confirmed positive on Tuesday.

Further tests will be conducted to confirm the Covid-19 strain the man has.

The work pass holder who also preliminarily tested positive for the B117 strain is a 53-year-old man who returned from the United Kingdom. He was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, there were 24 other imported cases, all of whom had been placed on stay-home notice or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said MOH.

Among the imported cases, three are Singaporean, four are permanent residents, five are work pass holders and seven are work permit holders.

Of the seven work permit holders, six are foreign domestic workers.

The imported cases also include three dependant's pass holders, one student pass holder, one long-term visit pass holder, one short-term visit pass holder and one special pass holder.

The sole community case announced on Wednesday was a permanent resident who works as a marine surveyor at Lloyd's Register Singapore.

As part of his job, the 46-year-old man works on board vessels docked at Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard.

He had not gone to work since the onset of symptoms on Sunday.

His case is currently unlinked and epidemiological investigations are being done, said MOH.

Marina Bay Sands, IMM, Takashimaya and Orchard Gateway were among places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious, said MOH.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained low, with a total of two cases in the past week which are currently unlinked.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died of other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December last year, has infected more than 82.6 million people. More than 1.8 million people have died.

SINGAPORE - There were 30 new coronavirus cases confirmed as of Friday noon (Jan 1), with three new community cases, taking Singapore's total to 58,629.

Two of the community cases are contacts of previous cases working in the marine sector, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

One is a family member of Case 58,817, a Singaporean harbour pilot who was confirmed to have Covid-19 on Thursday.

The other is a close contact of Case 58,810, a Singaporean permanent resident working as a Marine Surveyor who was reported as a community case on Wednesday.

There were also 27 imported cases who had been placed on stay-home notices on arrival in Singapore.

More details will be announced on Friday night.

A Raffles Girls' School student who was last in school on Dec 23 was among the five community cases announced on Thursday.

The 14-year-old permanent resident was one of two family members of Case 58,810, a permanent resident who works as a marine surveyor at Lloyd's Register Singapore.

The other family member is a 46-year-old permanent resident who works as a freelance florist at her place of residence at Ghim Moh Road.
Both of them live in the same household and had been placed on home quarantine on Dec 30.

The third community case is a 55-year-old Singaporean man who worked as a harbour pilot at PSA Marine in West Coast Ferry Road.

He boards vessels as part of his work to navigate them through congested waters, said MOH.

The man was asymptomatic and had been detected via the ministry's rostered routine testing of workers in the construction, marine and process sectors.

MOH added that on Dec 13, the man had visited Parkway Parade with seven other individuals and was known to visit his relatives who stayed near his residence at Marine Crescent.

Investigations are ongoing to assess if there was any breach of safe management measures, the ministry said.

The other two new community cases are a 79-year-old Singaporean woman who is a retiree and a 50-year-old Singaporean man who is currently unemployed.

Both of them are relatives of the 55-year-old man who stays at Marine Crescent.

MOH added that all the identified close contacts of the cases, including their family members and co-workers, have been isolated and placed on quarantine.

They will all be tested at the start and end of their quarantine period so that the ministry can detect asymptomatic cases.

The Government has also said that it is reviewing precautionary measures for workers in the marine sector.

MOH will start special testing operations to test people who had boarded the ships that Cases 58,810 and 58,817 recently worked on.

It will also test harbour pilots, marine surveyors and ship repair workers in the coming days, regardless of their rostered routine testing schedule, to determine if they have the virus.

"In view of the recent cases involving the marine sector, we will review the need to tighten our precautionary measures for these workers," said the ministry.

There were also 25 new imported coronavirus cases confirmed on Thursday. This means there were 30 new cases on Thursday, the highest daily total since Sept 21, when there were 31 cases.

The 25 were placed on stay-home notices or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said MOH.

Among them, two are Singaporeans and three are permanent residents.

There are also two work pass holders, 14 work permit holders of which nine are foreign domestic workers, one dependant's pass holder, one long-term visit pass holder, one short-term visit pass holder and one special pass holder.

The imported cases came from various countries including the United Kingdom, Indonesia and India.

Geylang Serai Malay Market and Food Centre, Kampong Glam Cafe in Bussorah Street and New Hawa Restaurant in Changi Road were among places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious, said MOH.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has increased to seven, with a total of three cases in the past week who are currently unlinked.

A total of 57 patients remain in hospital while 64 are recuperating in community facilities. One patient is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

"The recent community cases are a stark reminder that we cannot afford to let our guard down, especially during this festive period when there are increased social interactions," said MOH.

"Let us work together to avoid an uncontrolled resurgence of cases which could slow or even reverse our progress," it added.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 82.7 million people. Over 1.8 million people have died.

SINGAPORE - There were 33 new coronavirus cases confirmed at noon on Saturday (Jan 2), taking Singapore's total to 58,662.

Saturday’s number is the the highest daily figure since Sept 15 when there were 34 cases.

The new cases were all imported and had been placed on stay-home notices or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Among the 33 new cases, there are six Singapore permanent residents from India and Indonesia, five dependant’s pass holders including a three-year-old girl from India and two long-term visit pass holders from Egypt and India, and one student’s pass holder from India.

There are also 12 work permit holders from Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh and the Philippines, of which nine are foreign domestic workers, said the ministry.

There is also one short-term visit pass holder who arrived from Indonesia to visit her Singaporean parent.

There were two symptomatic cases among the 33 new coronavirus cases here confirmed on Saturday. The rest were asymptomatic.

There were no new community cases and none from workers’ dormitories.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has increased from one case in the week before to 10 cases in the past week.

The number of unlinked cases in the community has also increased from one case in the week before to four cases in the past week.

A total of 61 patients remained in hospital on Saturday, while 96 were recuperating in community facilities. One patient was in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Seventeen patients were discharged.

On Friday, a second Raffles Girls' School (RGS) student was among the three community cases announced.

The 14-year-old Singaporean is a friend of an earlier confirmed case - a family member of a permanent resident, a marine surveyor at Lloyd's Register Singapore, who was also previously confirmed to have the coronavirus.

The teen had visited her friend, who is also an RGS student, at her home on Dec 27 for a few hours while the marine surveyor was present. As a result, the girl, who was last in school in October, was identified as a close contact and quarantined, said the Health Ministry.

She developed a fever on Wednesday and was taken by ambulance to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where she was tested for the virus, added the ministry. Her test result came back positive for the infection on Thursday. Her serological test result has also come back negative, indicating that she likely has a current infection.

The second linked community case is a 52-year-old Singaporean woman who works as a client analyst at Deutsche Bank at One Raffles Quay but does not interact with clients or external parties.

She is a family member of an earlier confirmed case, a Singaporean who works as a harbour pilot, as well as two community cases reported on Thursday, said MOH.

She developed symptoms on Monday and sought medical treatment at a general practitioner clinic on Tuesday. However, she chose not to take a Covid-19 test despite being advised by a doctor to do so. She was given five days' medical leave, during which she had to remain at home.

On Thursday, she was placed on quarantine after being identified as a close contact of previous community cases and reported being unwell when contacted by MOH.

Her test result came back positive for Covid-19 after she was taken to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) in an ambulance.

Her serological test result came back negative, indicating there is likely a current infection.

Those advised by their doctors to take a Covid-19 test should do so, to allow early identification of affected individuals and to contain further spread of the virus, MOH said.

In Friday's statement, MOH also said that following an investigation of Mandarin Orchard Singapore, it has "determined that there was no further transmission" beyond the 13 cases previously reported. It has approved the reopening of the hotel from Saturday, including its restaurant and event spaces.

There were also 27 new imported coronavirus cases confirmed on Friday.

Restaurants at Chijmes and Tanjong Pagar as well as Takashimaya department store at Ngee Ann City were among the new places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious, said MOH.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 82.7 million people. More than 1.8 million people have died.

SINGAPORE -Thirty-five new cases of Covid-19, all imported, were confirmed here on Sunday (Jan 3).

The number is the highest daily figure since Sept 14, when there were 48 cases. The highest for imported cases before this was March 28 when there were 42 imported cases.

The new cases take Singapore's total of confirmed infections to 58,697.

Announcing the numbers, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said all the infected individuals had been on stay-home notices or were in isolation when they were tested.

Separately, MOH said it had found links between previously announced cases, which now form two clusters, each with four individuals who are linked.

One of Sunday's new cases is a cargo pilot who arrived from the United States via Australia. He was sent directly to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) where he was tested and confirmed to have Covid-19.

His serological test result also came back positive.

Another of the cases was a ship crew member who boarded a vessel in Indonesia in March last year.

He developed a fever on Dec 23 but had self-medicated, and was later placed on quarantine onboard ship on Dec 31 as he had been identified as a close contact of a previously reported case, another crew member on the same vessel.

The sailor announced in Sunday's cases did not declare his symptoms until a teleconsultation with a doctor on Jan 2 , and was taken to NCID, where he tested positive for Covid-19.

MOH said that the man never disembarked from the vessel, and that all its remaining crew members have been placed under quarantine.

Of the 35 individuals with confirmed infections, one is a Singaporean, five are permanent residents, 10 are dependant's pass holders, and one is a long term visit pass holder.

There are also 12 work permit holders, four work pass holders and two short-term visit pass holders.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community increased from one case in the week before last to 10 cases last week.

The number of unlinked cases in the community also increased from one case in the week before last to four last week.

A total of 64 patients remain in hospital while 117 are recuperating in community facilities. One patient is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Twenty-nine people have died from the virus here, while 15 others who had Covid-19 have died from other complications.

Eleven more people were discharged on Sunday, bringing the total number of those discharged here to 58,472.

SINGAPORE - There were 31 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Wednesday noon (Jan 6), taking Singapore's total to 58,780.

There were 29 imported cases who had been placed on stay-home notices or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Among them, three are Singaporeans or permanent residents, and 12 are foreign domestic workers.

Wednesday's cases also included two community cases.

No new cases from within workers' dormitories were announced on Wednesday.

More details will be given on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, a 55-year-old cargo officer linked to a new cluster in the marine sector was among two community cases of the coronavirus announced.

There were also 26 imported cases confirmed by MOH on Tuesday.

The cargo officer is a Singaporean man who was on board bunker tanker NewOcean 6 from Dec 21 to Dec 23, and from Dec 28 to last Saturday.

He stayed at his home in Tah Ching Road between Dec 23 and 28.

MOH added on Tuesday that the cargo officer as well as five newly confirmed cases are linked to three previous cases, forming a new cluster.

The man's earlier tests from rostered routine testing - the last being on Dec 23 - had come back negative for Covid-19.

Last Thursday, he was placed under quarantine after being identified as a close contact of another case, a 47-year-old ship crew member on the same vessel.

The cargo officer was taken to a government quarantine facility last Saturday, and tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.

He was then taken to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases.

His serological test result has come back negative, indicating that this is likely a current infection.

All the remaining crew members of the vessel have been quarantined since last Thursday, said MOH.

The other community case reported on Tuesday is a 49-year-old Indian national who is here to visit his Singaporean spouse.

The short-term-visit pass holder arrived from India on Dec 10 and served his stay-home notice at a dedicated facility until Dec 24.

He is asymptomatic and was detected when he took a Covid-19 pre-departure test on Sunday before his return to India. His result came back positive for Covid-19 on Monday and he was taken to Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

His serological test result has come back positive, which indicates a likely past infection.

His case is currently unlinked, MOH said on Tuesday.

The 26 imported cases on Tuesday comprise two Singaporeans, two permanent residents, two work pass holders and 20 work permit holders.

Meanwhile, Cedele Bakery at Velocity @ Novena Square and Ikea Alexandra were among places added to the list of locations visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has increased from one case in the week before to 11 cases in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also increased to four cases in the past week from one case the week before.

With 20 cases discharged on Tuesday, 58,502 patients have fully recovered from the disease.

A total of 60 patients remained in hospital on Tuesday, including one in the intensive care unit, while 143 were recuperating in community facilities.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died of other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 86.3 million people. More than 1.86 million people have died.

SINGAPORE - There were 33 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Thursday noon (Jan 7), taking Singapore's total to 58,813.

There were two cases in the community.

Thursday's figures also included 31 imported cases who had been placed on stay-home notices (SHN) or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Among them, seven are Singaporeans or permanent residents, and 12 are foreign domestic workers.

No new cases from within workers' dormitories were announced.

More details will be announced on Thursday night.

On Wednesday, a 24-year-old Korean man who works at the Azur restaurant in Crowne Plaza Changi Airport was among the two new unlinked community cases.

The work permit holder also preliminarily tested positive for the more infectious B117 strain of Covid-19 and was pending further confirmatory tests.

He delivered pre-packed meals to air crew and hotel guests, but did not interact with diners at the restaurant, said MOH.

The man's infection was detected during rostered routine testing last Saturday. He was tested again on Monday. That same day, he developed acute respiratory infection symptoms.

His test result came back positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday.

His serological test result came back negative, indicating that this is likely a current infection, said MOH.

The other community case is a 31-year-old Filipino work permit holder who arrived from the Philippines on Dec 4 and served his SHN until Dec 18. His pre-departure test on Dec 1 and test on Dec 14 during SHN were both negative.

He is employed by Singapore General Hospital but has yet to start work.

As part of his pre-employment health screening, he was tested for Covid-19 on Tuesday and his test result came back positive.

His serological test result also came back positive, which indicates a likely past infection.

There were also 29 imported cases confirmed on Wednesday.

They comprise one Singaporean, two permanent residents, one dependant's pass holder, five work pass holders, 16 work permit holders, one special pass holder and three short-term visit pass holders.

They tested positive while in isolation or serving SHN after their arrival in Singapore, said MOH. They had travelled from several countries including Britain, India and Indonesia.

MOH also said on Wednesday that stores in Plaza Singapura, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, Junction 8 and Food Paradise @ NTU Canteen 2 are among places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community went up from two cases in the week before to 12 cases in the past week.

The number of unlinked cases in the community also rose from two cases in the week before to five in the past week.

A total of 64 patients were in hospital on Wednesday, including one in the intensive care unit, while 146 were recuperating in community facilities.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died of other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 87.1 million people. More than 1.88 million people have died.

SINGAPORE - There were 23 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Friday noon (Jan 8), taking Singapore's total to 58,836.

They included 21 imported cases who had been placed on stay-home notices on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Friday's figure also included two community cases.

No new cases from within workers' dormitories were announced.

More details will be announced on Friday night.

On Thursday, the Health Ministry said Crowne Plaza Changi Airport will be closed for two weeks from Friday after a second unlinked Covid-19 case - a Malaysian working at the hotel's Azur restaurant - emerged.

MOH said it is closing the hotel until Jan 21 as a precautionary measure as it cannot rule out the possibility that transmissions could have occurred at the hotel.

The hotel will stop accepting new guests, and foreign air crew and guests currently staying at the hotel will be checked out progressively, said MOH.

Incoming air crew will be housed in alternative facilities, it added.

Restaurant and event spaces within the hotel will also be closed, and deep cleaning and disinfection carried out. MOH has also started to test all staff working at the hotel for Covid-19.

The second case at Azur is a 43-year-old Malaysian work permit holder who delivers pre-packed meals to air crew and hotel guests. She was one of two unlinked community cases reported on Thursday.

A Korean national was confirmed as a Covid-19 patient on Wednesday. Like the Korean, the Malaysian woman does not interact with diners at the restaurant.

MOH said she developed symptoms while at work on Sunday and went on Tuesday to a general practitioner clinic, where she was tested. Her result came back positive for Covid-19 infection the next day, and she was taken to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases in an ambulance.

Her serological test result has come back negative, indicating that this is likely a current infection.

Preliminary investigations reveal that she probably does not have the more infectious British strain of Covid-19, said MOH.

The second community case is a 63-year-old cargo operator at AirMark Aviation who is based at Dnata Cargo Centre.

He mainly handles loading and unloading of cargo for My Indo Airlines, and does not interact with flight passengers.

He developed symptoms on Monday and sought treatment at Changi General Hospital on Wednesday. He was confirmed to be positive for Covid-19 on the same day and warded. His serological test result is pending.

There were also 31 imported cases confirmed on Thursday. They comprise four Singaporeans, three permanent residents, three dependant's pass holders, two work pass holders and 19 work permit holders.

They tested positive while serving stay-home notice or in isolation after their arrival in Singapore, said MOH.

They came from several countries, including India, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Except for one case, all were placed on stay-home notices upon arrival in Singapore.

The work permit holder arrived from Bangladesh on Dec 22 last year but could not clear immigration due to incomplete documentation. He was held at a facility located at the airport's transit area until Dec 24, and taken to a dedicated stay-home notice facility after the issues were resolved.

Apart from Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple and NTUC Income at 2 Tampines Central 6 were on Thursday added to places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious.

Those who had been identified as close contacts of confirmed cases would already have been notified by MOH.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has increased from seven cases in the week before to nine cases in the past week.

The number of unlinked cases in the community has also increased from three cases in the week before to six cases in the past week.

With 21 cases discharged on Thursday, 58,547 patients have fully recovered from the disease.

A total of 61 patients remained in hospital on Thursday, including one in the intensive care unit, while 161 are recuperating in community facilities.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died of other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 87.9 million people. More than 1.89 million people have died.

SINGAPORE - There were 29 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Saturday noon (Jan 9), taking Singapore's total to 58,865.

All of them were imported cases that had been placed on stay-home notice on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

There were no community cases.

On Friday, MOH announced two community cases, one of whom is a Singaporean man who works at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport's Azur restaurant.

The 20-year-old Singaporean is the third confirmed case at Azur.

He has tested preliminarily positive for the more infectious British strain of Covid-19.

He delivers pre-packed meals to air crew and hotel guests, and did not interact with diners at Azur.

His earlier tests from rostered routine testing - the last being on Jan 1 - were negative for Covid-19.

The Singaporean had been identified as a close contact of the Korean work permit holder reported on Wednesday and had been placed under quarantine on Tuesday at a quarantine facility.

He developed symptoms on Thursday, and was swabbed the same day.

His test came back positive for Covid-19, and he was taken to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases in an ambulance.

His serological test result came back negative, indicating that this was likely a current infection.

Special testing operations at the hotel are under way, and 233 staff have been swabbed, said MOH. Of these, 129 test results are negative, and 104 test results are pending.

The second community case was a 34-year-old harbour pilot at PSA Marine and the fifth case to be linked to the Singaporean harbour pilot who was confirmed to have Covid-19 on Dec 30.

He was placed under quarantine on Jan 1 at a quarantine facility after being identified as a close contact.

His swab on Sunday was negative for Covid-19, but another test taken on Thursday came back positive for the infection.

The Singaporean man was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital in an ambulance. He developed symptoms on Friday, and his serological test result is pending.

Tampines Mall and Gochi-So Shokudo restaurant at Tampines 1 were added to the list of places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious, added MOH on Friday.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died of other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 88 million people. More than 1.89 million people have died.

SINGAPORE - There were 42 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at noon on Sunday (Jan 10), taking Singapore's total to 58,907.

They were all imported cases who had been placed on stay-home notice or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

This is the highest number of imported infections since March 28 last year, when there were also 42 such cases. The highest number of imported cases since then was 35, on Jan 3.

There were no cases in the community or in workers' dormitories.

More details will be announced on Sunday night.

On Saturday night, the MOH announced that a total of 234 employees working at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport had tested negative for Covid-19.

The ministry last Thursday announced a special testing operation for all hotel staff after two unlinked cases were found among them. A third confirmed case emerged the next day.

It closed the hotel from Friday to Jan 21 as a precautionary measure.

The three cases were a 20-year-old male Singaporean, a 24-year-old male Korean national and a 43-year-old Malaysian woman.

The Singaporean had tested positive for the more infectious UK strain of Covid-19 and his case was pending further confirmatory tests last Friday.

All three hotel workers had delivered pre-packed meals to air crew and hotel guests.

"From our preliminary investigations, we cannot exclude that transmissions could have occurred at the hotel," said the MOH in Saturday's press release.

On Saturday night, the MOH also confirmed 29 new Covid-19 cases, all of which were imported.

They included four Singaporeans, one of whom is a 71-year-old man who returned from India and was asymptomatic. The other three arrived from Sweden and Britain.

There were also three dependant's pass holders who arrived from the United Arab Emirates, India and the Maldives.

Also among the imported cases was a special pass holder who is a sea crew member. He arrived from Indonesia on board a vessel and was swabbed upon arrival. He was taken to the hospital when his test result came back positive for Covid-19 infection.

Meanwhile, Indian restaurant Sri Aachi Aappakadai in Little India was added to the list of places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious, said the MOH.

With 31 cases discharged on Saturday, 58,596 patients have fully recovered from the disease.

A total of 67 patients remain in hospital, including one in the intensive care unit, while 158 are recuperating in community facilities. Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died of other causes.

SINGAPORE - There were 22 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Monday noon (Jan 11), taking Singapore's total to 58,929.

All of them were imported cases and had been placed on stay-home notice or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

No cases were from workers' dormitories or from the community.

More details will be announced on Monday night.

On Sunday, Singapore reported a nine-month high of 42 imported cases.

More than half of them were work permit holders who arrived from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Five of these 24 work permit holders were foreign domestic workers, and 40 of the imported cases were asymptomatic.

The other 18 cases comprised two Singaporeans, two permanent residents (PRs), six dependant's pass holders, four work pass holders, one long-term visit pass holder, one short-term visit pass holder and two special pass holders.

All the cases had been placed on stay-home notice or isolated upon arrival in Singapore, and were tested during this period, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Sunday.

The two Singaporeans were returning from Malaysia while both PRs were returning from India.

Both the long-term visit pass holder and the short-term visit pass holder also arrived from India, while the six dependant's pass holders arrived from Austria, India, Nepal and the United Arab Emirates.

The two special pass holders were sea crew who arrived on separate vessels from Myanmar and Indonesia. They had been tested on board and had not disembarked before being tested.

They were taken to hospital when they tested positive for Covid-19, said the MOH.

Forty-two is the highest number of imported cases since March 28, which saw the same number of cases.

The number of new cases in the community has decreased to eight last week from 10 the week before.

The number of unlinked cases in the community has increased to five in the past week from four the week before.

With 25 cases discharged on Sunday, 58,621 patients have fully recovered from the disease.

A total of 60 patients remain in hospital, including one in the intensive care unit, while 182 are recuperating in community facilities.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died of other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 88 million people. More than 1.89 million people have died.

None of these experts recommends cutting down on the number of arrivals into Singapore. Let's see.

11 JAN 2021

SINGAPORE - The rise in imported Covid-19 cases here has been expected by scientists, who say it is an indication of Singapore lifting border restrictions, and the success of measures to screen out infections amid a rise in cases globally.

From Dec 15 last year to Sunday (Jan 10), Singapore identified 562 imported cases from 31 different countries.

The number of daily cases were in the double digits, compared to between October and November last year when fewer than 10 imported cases were recorded daily.

Singapore had unilaterally lifted border restrictions since September, gradually allowing into the country visitors from Brunei, China, New Zealand, Vietnam, Australia and Taiwan.

This easing of restrictions was also extended to new work permit and S Pass applications across all sectors, to alleviate the manpower shortage faced by businesses.

Associate Professor Josip Car, director of the Centre for Population Health Sciences at Nanyang Technological University's Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, said the rise is expected, "given the intensification of the Covid-19 disease globally, especially with the discovery of the new and highly transmissible strain of the virus".

Case numbers are surging in many of the countries of origin of those arriving here, added Professor Dale Fisher, who is from the Department of Medicine in the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

For example, Britain saw 417,620 people test positive for Covid-19 from Jan 3 to 9, which was 75,674 more than the previous week.

Britain has been the third-largest source of imported cases into Singapore since Dec 15, with 32 travellers testing positive to date.

online-210110_covid-infections_singapore_0.jpg

Prof Fisher, who is also chair of the World Health Organisation's Global Outbreak and Alert and Response Network, said many of those from high prevalence countries will test positive during their 14-day stay-home notice (SHN) in Singapore.

The number placed on SHN, which includes almost all travellers, rose to 16,695 on Dec 15, up from 14,805 on Nov 15.
But the proportion of those on SHN testing positive for Covid-19 has remained low.

For instance, Singapore saw 35 imported cases on Jan 3, or 0.2 per cent of the 18,426 people on SHN at that point.

Prof Car added that the higher number is "a good sign that our detection measures are successful in screening out infected cases, given that community spread is still low".

Associate Professor Alex Cook of the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health said he is not concerned.

"Unlike the first quarter of last year, travellers from high-risk source countries are subject to hotel-based quarantine, which substantially reduces the risk of spillover.

"Since August, we've seen consistent levels of imported cases but hardly any community cases. That suggests the current quarantine regime is working," added Prof Cook, the vice-dean of research and domain leader of biostatistics and modelling.

The experts said the number of imported cases is unlikely to fall unless the rate of transmission overseas does, or Singapore reduces its number of arrivals.

But Prof Fisher pointed out that people travelling here do so for important social or business reasons, and the vast majority of them do not have Covid-19.

He added: "We are asking a lot from our hotels and they should be commended for their contribution to Singapore's response to Covid-19.

"They are performing tasks far beyond what they are designed for.

"And because of their efforts, travel is enabled (and) the healthcare system will not be overwhelmed by imported cases."

Prof Cook said that even if a few infected travellers are missed, their potential impact can be "mopped up" by the safe management measures in place in the community.

He added that the slight uptick in community cases is the result of the country gradually opening up.

"Phase three is characterised by greater normalcy than phase two, which of course means the risk of transmission is higher.

"We believe this can be countered by the safe management measures that we have in place now, though time will tell whether the balance is still right," he said.

Prof Car said Singapore should next look to getting the vaccinations in place while maintaining responsible behaviour to curtail possible transmissions.

"With growing numbers of people being vaccinated, the world is hoping to prevent serious infections and eventually reduce the risk of a worsening outbreak," he added

KNN they never mention on average how many % of imported tested negatives KNN since daily can have 20+ positive means there should be few hundreds of ft and fw coming in on daily basis KNN

17 community cases in 2021 and both professors said that community spread is still low or that there are hardly any community cases!!??

What the professors are saying is that local community cases are good for Singapore. They would worry if there are no community cases, just like Goh Chok Tong worry if there is no recession.

Rule no 1: if you don't test you won't know the results Rule no 2: all should have the choice to test if they already have the antibodies before taking the vaccine and rule no 3:
