Prince William Makes Hair Joke As He Introduces the Royal Baby to the World
Standing with his wife the Duchess of Cambridge as they greeted the world press and a hoard of well-wishers who had been awaiting their appearance for days, Prince William proudly showed off his new son, the as yet to be named Prince of Cambridge.
Clearly thrilled to be a new father, William and Kate graciously answered a number of questions from the paps, before the proud father cracked a joke about his son’s rather hairless head, saying: ”He’s got way more than me, thank God”. Joking again he added: “He’s got her looks, thankfully,” while new mother Kate replied: “No, no, I’m not sure about that.”
Like Father, Like Son?
Clearly intending to be a hands on dad, it was also revealed by Kate that William had changed his first nappy, whilst William quipped that his son had “a good pair of lungs on him…He’s a big boy, he’s quite heavy.” Strapping his child into the car seat of his Range Rover, William thanked the staff of the Lindo wing, before driving his family home.
Whilst some babies are born with fairly large heads of hair, it’s perfectly normal for months to pass before normal hair growth is established. So, it’s certainly true that a lack of hair at birth shouldn’t be taken to mean that the royal baby will have the same predisposition to early male pattern hair loss as his father, his uncle, Harry, and grandfather, Prince Charles. Indeed, a new company selling wigs for babies came under fire earlier this month for placing undue impetus on babies having hair.
A Royal Hair
So, what are the odds of the new royal baby experiencing hair loss down the line? It’s certainly true that his father’s side of the family exhibits a clear tendency towards male pattern hair loss. This type of balding is genetic, which means that the predisposition to hair loss on account of DHT sensitivity is passed down through the generations.
So, if his dad, uncle and grandfather also seem to have lost hair at a fairly early age, does it definitely follow that the new prince will, too? Not necessarily; it’s possible that the gene for balding can be carried but not expressed (that is, you can have the predisposition to baldness without it actually happening).
The new baby also has in its favour the fact that Kate’s father Michael and brother James both have thick heads of hair. Traditionally, men were told to look at their mother’s father for an idea of the kind of hair loss that they can expect, although new research suggests that genes that cause baldness can be inherited from either parent.
Should the prince begin to notice thinning hair, a proven hair loss treatment plan can halt hair loss and regrow thinning hair. In order to do this, the programme would ideally contain the two medications licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA. The first, Propecia, works by blocking DHT, which causes follicular miniaturisation atop the scalp leading to thinner, weaker hairs being produced.
The second medication, minoxidil, is dose dependent, enabling a hair loss specialist to tailor your daily dosage to your individual case of hair loss. For particularly stubborn thinning, a high strength minoxidil cream can achieve excellent results. The two medications are highly complementary, and work alongside various treatment boosters to ensure all-round hair health.
