In trouble over RM1 hot water

GEORGE TOWN: A restaurant owner who charged RM1 for a glass of warm water faces a fine of up to RM15,000 for not displaying the price of the drink. The state Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Ministry sent two officers undercover on Monday to check on a complaint lodged by a customer.

“Customers were charged RM1 each for a glass of warm water. The price was not stated in the menu,” said the division’s enforcement chief M. Gunaselan. Gunaselan said the restaurant owner in Tanjung Tokong, who is in his 30s, could be penalised under the Price Control Act 1946.

“The individual can be fined up to RM15,000 or face a maximum of two years’ jail or both while the company can be fined up to RM25,000,” he said. Gunaselan urged traders and food stall owners to display the price of food and drinks clearly. “Although food and drinks are not controlled items, traders should charge reasonably,” he said.
