A department store in central Paris announced on Tuesday the end of its cooperation with Chinese ultra-fast fashion giant Shein, which, French media reported, could see the e-commerce platform’s first physical store closed by this Christmas.

La Societe des Grands Magasins (SGM), owner of the historic BHV Marais, which sits opposite Paris City Hall a few hundred meters from Notre-Dame cathedral, has sold the store to a group of executives, led by Karl-Stephane Cottendin, the group’s outgoing CEO, according to a statement from the company. Agence France-Presse reported that SGM sold the store at a loss.

Cottendin, who publicly defended the decision to open a Shein store at BHV Marais last November, admitted seven months later that the decision was a “strategic error” and said Shein would “ideally” leave the store by Christmas, AFP reported.

Western brands just can't compete. Look at the Shein website - pants and shirts for $10-$20, same quality as Western brands but 10x cheaper. All my staff get their clothes from Shein, and resell on Carousel after wearing them a couple of times or give them away on Blessings.

Western brand get their supplies from China. After chinese manufacturers get to know the designers, they decided to hire them and sell direct to consumers.

Everything is made in China. The cost of manufacturing is very low, less than $2 per piece, but Western companies mark up the prices by 100x - basically to pay for advertising and marketing, and line the pockets of shareholders for listed companies. High prices maintain the illusion of exclusivity and increases desirability.

Compare a Ralph Lauren (or Lacoste) polo shirt to one sold on Shein. You can't tell the difference, but the gap in price is ridiculous. You're just paying a huge premium for the brand prestige.
