Yes, more should follow example of brave Australian
AUSTRALIAN Ivan Batterham's actions described in his letter last Saturday, 'Turn a blind eye to violence?', deserve praise. He witnessed an act of violence, and intervened.
A common attitude among members of the public is to keep oneself safe by not courting trouble through interference.
Such an approach of non-confrontation, also known as the bystander effect, plagues many modern fast- paced cities.
Mr Batterham's public-spirited act had a positive effect. Once he had intervened, several onlookers were emboldened to participate. The woman bystander who asked him to leave intended to pre-empt a physical conflict between Mr Batterham and the assailant.
More people should step in to support him. I hope the girl who was physically abused will be more aware of the ways she can obtain help and protection, such as from the Association of Women for Action and Research or by making a report to the authorities.
I urge Singaporeans to follow Mr Batterham's example of standing up to wrongdoing in public. Certainly, one should also do so sensibly.
If the situation is potentially dangerous, call the police.
