Many of the folks here, including PAP IB chaps like Lordshiva & his ilk, are absolutely clueless as to why Singapore is solidly in the pro-USA camp while admitting Tiongs here by the millions and appearing to suck up to China. There's no contradiction here in terms of foreign policy if you understand the PAP's motives, which are chiefly driven by 2 dynamics:
1. Threats from Islamic fundamentalism. Basically a consequence of our 'Israel of S.E. Asia' geo-political stance as the only Chinese-majority nation in a Muslim-dominated neighbourhood and our beggar-thy-neighbour policies of exploiting our less developed but much bigger neighbours.
— this behooves the Pappy cowards to ensconce themselves firmly in the US-allied camp, which includes the Five Power Defence Arrangements. This gives temporary security, but opens us up to anti-US, fundamentalist Islamic sentiments and threats both within and without our country in the long term. Mas Selamat is a prime example.
— diluting the Malay population by bringing huge numbers of PRC and (to a lesser degree) Indian nationals, so as to reduce the threat to the PAPzi's reign by disgruntled Malays
— admitting large numbers of immigrants also ensure PAP's electoral survival because new immigrants tend to vote for the incumbent
2. Economic imperatives.
— Again, US and the West have controlled the world's economy for the past century and their MNCs and financial institutions have just about trampled the native economies of almost all developing countries while benefitting their corrupt leaders and cronies. One reason why we have been and are still solidly in the US-allied camp. The US is still the world's #1 economy and #1 consumer market.
— With the rise of China and the Asian century, Singapore realizes that it has to suck up to China — now the world's #2 economy — if it wants to continue to grow faster. In other words, hoping to ride on the gravy train with the other big Chinese cities
— Importing large numbers of immigrants from China (and India) will also boost GDP here through consumption (not productivity), thus justifying ever-increasing ministerial salaries and enriching the power elite here and their business cronies at the expense of the masses. Per capita GDP rises, but Gini rises as well.
You're right. Xi Jinping is no fool. He sees right through the porlumpah shenanigans of the Pappy bastards in trying to have their bread buttered both sides, while knowing that Singapore's true loyalty still lies with the imperialist West.
We allow American nuclear subs to dock here, but whisper sweet nothings to China for business. But truly, there's no schizophrenia in our foreign policy, for those with eyes to see and brains to think.
