<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->
KUALA LUMPUR - DISSIDENTS in Malaysia's ruling party demanded the prime minister's resignation on Wednesday after opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim returned to Parliament with a sweeping election victory.
Anwar regained his Parliament seat in the north by a landslide in Tuesday's by-election, delivering a demoralising defeat for the government. Anwar's feat came on the heels of massive gains the opposition made in the March general elections.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had hoped to make amends in Tuesday's poll.
Veteran government lawmaker Razaleigh Hamzah, who wants to challenge Abdullah for the leadership of the United Malays National Organisation ruling party, said the results meant that 'what scraps of credibility (Abdullah) had left after March 8 are gone'.
'It is time to face the music: it is we who have been buried,' Mr Razaleigh said.
Mr Abdullah, however, played down the significance of Anwar's triumph.
'I believe we can still continue the government,' Mr Abdullah was quoted as saying by the Bernama national news agency. 'What happened ... was not something so big as to change the situation that exists after the last general election.'
Government leaders had mounted a fierce campaign to deny Anwar victory, hoping voters in Anwar's longtime bedrock of support would desert the charismatic politician after he was charged with sodomising his 23-year-old former male aide. No date has been set for a trial.
Anwar says the 'most sickening' allegation is politically motivated. His election victory has boosted his chances of toppling Mr Abdullah's government through parliamentary defections, which he has vowed to do by Sept. 16.
In the March elections, Anwar's three-party alliance won an unprecedented 82 of parliament's 222 seats - 30 short of a majority - and wrested control of five states.
Parliament Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia said Anwar would be formally sworn in as a lawmaker on Thursday.
Opposition parties also planned to endorse him as their leader ahead of a key parliamentary session on Friday, when Mr Abdullah announces the annual budget.
Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who has slammed his successor's policies after handing power in 2003, said he believed many government supporters voted for Anwar 'so that Abdullah will realise that his leadership is no longer wanted'.
'Abdullah must take responsibility and resign now,' Dr Mahathir said.
Mr Mukhriz Mahathir, Dr Mahathir's lawmaker son, said that 'with Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament, we cannot afford to have a weak leadership because it could lead to our downfall'.
'The walls are crumbling but the top guy seems oblivious to his surroundings,' he said.
Government supporters also vented their fury on Internet forums.
Mykmu Net, a popular Web site for ruling party members, published comments by readers who said they 'hope (Abdullah) will be quickly ousted' and that Mr Abdullah's 'resignation will be the only way out'.
Mr Abdullah has repeatedly resisted calls to resign immediately after the March elections, though he has pledged to hand power to his deputy, Mr Najib Razak, by mid-2010 in a protracted transition plan publicly endorsed by most top government officials.
Anwar's re-entry into Parliament will complete his political rehabilitation. He was fired as deputy prime minister in 1998 and jailed for six years after he was convicted of corruption and sodomizing his family driver. Anwar's previous sodomy conviction was overturned by Malaysia's top court in 2004. He has always maintained that he was framed by his then-boss, Dr Mahathir, because of a power struggle. -- AP

The PAP will be scrutinizing the current events in Malaysia very closely especially if Anwar is able to pull the rabbit out of the hat and get the majority.

How Anwar and his band of men performs after taking over govt will affect PAp's margin of victory in the next election.

If the Spore opposition ever wakes up, this is a good opportunity for them to reel in more support by providing greater presence especially with the easing of rules.

first, the opposition here must show to the people that they are really capable of doing something for the people.
and not only for their own self.
and must speak with logic and not speak rubbish.

That's right comrade. Singaporeans are happy. Only losers hiding behind keyboards are unhappy- and they're a minority.

If the people are truly unhappy, my master will NEVER stay in power. By hook or crook, the people would have risen up. But is that happening???

Because unlike losers, 66.6% of us are happy with what the PAP is doing.
