So, now we have it. The following ministers have come out to explain that the 6.9million is not a target but something else.
First, Khaw Boon Wan. Supported by PM Lee. Then in quick succession over the weekend, Iswaran, Vivian Balakrishnan, Shanmmugam, Health Minister Gan came out of the woodwork to explain that the White Paper was not what it has been made out to be by the public.
Presumably, the Paper had the approval had the approval of the cabinet before it was released - and yet none of them had seen it fit that the communications needed to be improved? That "crisis of our lifetime" (as described by V Balakrishnan) issues need clarifications by different ministers in such a short space of time do not augurs well for everyone.
AWARE has raised the additional issue of why was not the paper floated for public discussion before being laid out in parliament? Yet "public consultations" had deemed necessary for much less life threatening issues.
When MPs expound their views in Parliament, are they speaking as individuals or as representatives of the their constituents? MPs should distinguish their personal views and the views of their constitutents in making their statements tomorrow. Or this is one big wayang? Will the Whip be lifted when push comes to shove?
