阿布扎比防务展最初创始于1993年，由阿联酋武装部以及阿布扎比国际展览有限公司联合打造，是中东地区最大的防务展之一。由于阿布扎比防务展主要面向中东的石油富国，所以，为了获得更多的订单，各国军火商们可以说，都是“使出浑身解数”力争在展览上获得中东各国的青睐。
本届阿布扎比防务展，我国也派出了庞大的代表团，主要装备包括WS-600L多用途武器系统、C602中远程反舰导弹武器系统、L15高级教练机、“麒麟”级常规潜艇、MRTV3000型护卫舰、ZDK-03型预警机、VT4型主战坦克等。但最为抢眼、最受媒体关注的，恐怕是刷着16号舷号的我国海军现役“辽宁”号航母。
当然，我国海军不可能把辽宁号开到阿联酋去参展，但是在中国防务公司的站台上，确实赫然摆放着以辽宁号航空母舰为旗舰的整个一支舰队所组成的模型。而且，就历年而言，敢把航母带到阿布扎比做展示的，恐怕中国还是第一家。
虽然防务展的宗旨是推销本国的武器装备，但是能把航母带上防务展的国家还是相当稀少，而且展示5万吨中型航母就更是独一份了。而且，航母本身就是海军中的“吞金巨兽”，并不是每个国家都用得起航母，所以在防务展上展示航母，而且是中型航母，确实有点令人疑惑，因为——谁会买航母呢？
其实，购买航母吨位最大的，恰恰是我国。当初苏联解体，剩下建造68%的瓦良格号航母仍在黑海码头，任凭风吹雨打，多年无人问津。后来我国以报废舰船名义买下，并在2002年时拖回大连进行大规模维修和翻新，并最终以“辽宁”号的名义加入了我国海军。
如今借助翻新改造辽宁号的经验，我国首艘自行建造的航母也很快将会交付海军服役，我国很快将会成为仅次于美国的世界第二航母大国。并且，官方已经公示，编号为003号的国产第二艘航母正在加紧建造。003号航母将会安装弹射器，结构类似于美国大型弹射式航母。在这种情况下，把辽宁号航母公开摆出来展示，很难说仅仅只是用于展示，很有可能，是真的有对外出售的意思。
不过目前全球范围来看，能够买得起航母的国家确实不多，而用得起航母的国家就更少。而且，该舰采用滑跃式起飞，因此可以使用的舰载型号有限，西方的战斗机目前无法在该舰上使用，只能使用中国国产的歼-15或者俄罗斯的苏-33和米格-33等战斗机。此外，虽然辽宁号满载排水量超过6万吨，但是由于采用滑跃式起飞方式，无法装备固定翼预警飞机，只能使用预警直升机，因此作战性能相对于美式航母，还是有较大缩水。
不过，对于辽宁号原先的“娘家”，从苏联独立出来的俄罗斯而言，由于自家的库兹涅佐夫号被砸坏，维修也遥遥无期，而中俄之间又有巨额的贸易往来，特别是中国每年从俄罗斯采购大量的石油和天然气。也许，通过石油贸易直接换取辽宁号航母，不失为一件双赢的事情。此外，南美第一大国巴西刚刚退役了唯一的一艘航母，此前该国曾帮助中国训练舰载机飞行员，如果辽宁舰能够入主巴西海军，不失为我们投桃报李的好事一桩。（作者署名：利刃军事）
