Hand-held touchscreen devices will be issued next year to soldiers who guard or patrol Singapore's key installations such as petrochemical hub Jurong Island and Changi Airport.
The men from the 9th Battalion Singapore Infantry Regiment (9 SIR), who will be given devices such as iPads or Samsung Galaxy tablets for field trials, will be among the first in the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) operational units to take this high-tech route.
Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Neo, 9 SIR's commanding officer, told The Straits Times that the devices will help the soldiers do a better job.
They can use the devices to track fellow security personnel in the area and take photos or videos. They can also better link up and share information with other enforcement agencies such as the police and Police Coast Guard.
