Alan Ramos, who worked at Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) as an IT consultant is now out of jail and has departed Singapore.
He is now the Chief Technology Officer at a start-up called Toltech Solutions in Los Angeles, California [Link]: Toltech’s website says Mr Ramos started his IT career in Singapore, which means prior to working for IDA, he had no IT working experience:

He was sentenced in January this year to 10 months’ jail for having sex with a minor who was 15 years old at the time (‘FT jailed 10 months for sex with minor‘).
Mr Ramos, 26, a Mexican, met the girl through an online dating website in 2012. They began texting soon afterwards.
When she learnt that he was fond of being addressed as “sir”, she asked if he had a thing for BDSM i.e. bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism.
When he replied that he did, she told him of her experience with BDSM, and how she had been a “submissive” in a previous relationship.
He then suggested being her new “dominant” and she agreed. They had sex in his Ang Mo Kio flat twice in 2012.
Mr Ramos could have been jailed 7 years and/or fined on each of the 2 sex charges he admitted to.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he managed software development in IDA. He was employed by IDA in January 2010 immediately after graduating from university:

Mr Ramos graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology:

It is not known why IDA hired a fresh psychology graduate with zero IT work experience to manage its software development. Nor is it known why a Singaporean or a Singapore graduate could not have done the job Mr Ramos did.

It looks like IDA made the right choice to hire Ramos. He had no IT background, but was willing to learn and able to hold his own in an IT company. He went to jail, lose his job and now is able to find a senior leadership position in an IT company in America, far away from Singapore. It is unlikely he relied on connections to get this job.

Sinkies, on the other hand, after losing their jobs, resign themselves to their fates and decide that the best available option is to drive taxis or be security guards. They give all sorts of excuses and refuse to venture overseas. Maybe they know their professional skills are actually worth jack shit.

Maybe Ramos would one day come back to work in Singapore, and sinkies with degrees from NUS would be pleading with this foreign talent who was once a jail bird here, for a job.

How certain are you that he didn't rely on "connections" to get a job

Maybe he got support from a peanut lady? Just look at TT Durai who managed to get some cushy job in Dubai via his connections. Dubai is also far away from Spore.

Spend more time at senior management level. Friend or no friend, any employee or associate who does not pull his weight at work is a bloody burden that is better off fired. I have fired personal friends at work before for incompetence. Needless to say, I learn an important lesson about allowing friends to get the job simply because they were friends. It was a hard lesson for me.

No manager or boss in real life would want to waste $50k - $100k a year at least on a PMET who cannot perform his job satisfactorily, unless you are his mistress or only son/daughter.

You are right. Sinkies generally look down on those with a silver tongue. However, having a silver tongue is an extremely important, be it you are doing technical or sales work. I have friends who are very successful insurance agents who pull in $500k a year as compared to engineer friends who are lucky if they can earn $80k a year. The insurance friends really have the gift of the gab. But of course, they too work very hard at their job.

Sinkies have been trained to despise good presentation and marketing as nothing more than gimmicks. But good marketing and networking are very important. Use McDonald's for example. Most people associate McDonalds as low class food. But the reality is that McDonalds have hundreds of branches in Singapore and tens of thousands more around the world, while your Michelin restaurant or favourite hawker stall with long queue is stuck with only 1 stall since forever. Marketing, aka the silver tongue, makes a huge difference.

If sinkies are poor at speaking, they should go join some public speaking workshops to brush up on their basic presentation skills, which also includes their grooming. Many sinkies I see look like slobs, or are an eyesore because they are too fat and balding. That too is a turn off. Presentation skills, silver tongue, is important. If all it took was technical skills to get ahead, we might as well stop working and give all the money to the straight-A students. And we do that, aka scholarships to generals like Kee Chiu and Boy Scout Tan, both who are regularly lampooned by samsters too for being mollycuddled from cradle to grave.

Don't know " how to play politics?, butter up...???", most SINKEES are "sabo king" especially two types of races....what most lack is, the ability to see opportunities & take risks, they have been "educated" & "eugenically" modified by the PAPpies, that, they know, only to do things by the books, by the regulations ...anything else...they are STUMPED. Many, are just dull....but some female versions certainly know, how to "butter between their legs"..for their bosses to get somewhere...

In general....they lack, confidence, charisma, risk adverse & poor in marketing themselves...expect things to "fall on their laps"..& behaved like "programmed robots" ( PAP program). that is the average Singaporeans!!

The problem with sinkies is that while LKY is a great man, he is not god. Learn from him. LKY is a man of the times, who survived the British, Japanese, the Communists, the British again, the Barisan Socialists. The opposition after that like JBJ and Chee are just cockroaches to him.

LKY is fluent in English and Malay. He is now studying Mandarin. LHL is fluent in English, Mandarin and Malay at the minimum. He can deliver speeches in all three languages, which demonstrates that he wants to be the leader of all sinkies. Most of your opposition politicians are barely fluent in one language, and most can't speak any of the other national language besides their own mother tongue.

You should learn from LKY's actions, not just what he says. What he says is meant for followers. If you just wanna be a follower, listen to him. If you wish to be a dragon amongst men, emulate his behaviour. And the ability to communicate well, observe and move with the times, is a crucial ingredient for success in career. It's not about the amount of skills and technical ability. Look at Tesla vs Thomas Edison. It's another classic example.

You have to wonder about the Spore System. In school you are expected to get grades above all else. Parents are too busy at work instead of bringing up the family.

During NS you had to learn how to survive in the army. I think this is where most people picked up their bad habits.:o That's where ones learns about thievery, lying, skiving, ...:o

Many of the successful american enterpreneurs did not even have a degree e.g. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs,..
