SINGAPORE - The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) says 1,698 immigration offenders were arrested in the first six months of this year, 18 per cent fewer compared to the same period, last year.
The bulk of the offenders were overstayers, accounting for 70 per cent of total immigration offenders.
The remainder were illegal immigrants.
ICA says the number of harbourers arrested in the first half of the year, dropped by about 36 per cent to 21 cases.
Similarly, the number of employers arrested fell by about 5 per cent to 18 cases.
ICA says the fall in the number of immigration offenders arrested is attributed to the effectiveness of its checkpoint and inland enforcement efforts, public education programmes as well as tough laws. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
