I was in Jakarta over the weekend with a friend. We were trying to return to hotel at around 2.30am. We were kind of worried in getting rob at that hour, around South Jakarta after some clubbing
After 15 mins of walking around, we finally got a cab back to the hotel. Half way back we were STOPPED!!!! Polis road block !!!
The polis stopped the cab and asked where we were from? We told them Singapore. The polis walked over to my side and opens the door, in very broken English, he asked politely to see our passport. I told them that our passport is in the hotel safe (normal safety precaution when overseas). The polis said “Oh, no and said we must carry our passport all time in Jakarta! Then he said we must follow them to the police station. I told him we can go back to the hotel and get it for them. He said .. no no no ….. and lots of conversation between all parties, my friends, cabbie and several polices. I must stated, not once the polis were aggressive nor impolite. After 5-10 mins, my friend and I suspected they are looking for some kopi money. So both of us agreed to act blur and pretend not to understand what they were saying. Their conversation were 80% in Bahasaand the rest in broken English, but their intention were clear.
After 15-20mins of cartoonist conversation, the polis were trying to beat around the bush for the money and us acting blur (well trained by SAF), one of the senior in frustration told the cabbie that they wanted 500,000Rp. The cabbie in turn try and tell us in again English with Bahasa ….. hee hee hee … again act blur.
In ” conversation”, I keep telling one officer that we can go back hotel to get for them and he in turn said no no!! To cut the long story short, the very very frustrated officer, said he want 200,000 RP and problem will go away. After nearly a total of 1/2hr, we gave them 200,000Rp.
I must stated again the polis were very polite and non aggressive even thou we frustrate them like no tomorrow. At one point, when the polis outright asked for the bribe, my friend told the polis that in Singapore we cannot give bribe and it against the law… ha ha ha ha … I look at the polis face… he was in a state of confusion, shock and close to speechless. He muttered softy, this is Indonesia. I was trying so hard to hold my laughter.
Anyway, 200,000Rp, is less than 30SG.
