When other countries are paying for your consumption, it is not screwed up. When you print new dollar notes and have your currency devaluated to pay back your debts, it is not screwed up either. What is really screwed up is when the US govt does not want to use its own money to rescue a bank and asks you to do it and you comply, that is really screwed up.

Remember it was the policies of Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge (both Republicans) that set the stage for the Wall Street Crash in 1929. It was another Republican, Herbert Hoover, who refused to mobilize government resources to pull the US out of the depression, and that caused more years of suffering. It took Democratic Franklin D Roosevelt to give the Americans a New Deal which, together with WW2, pulled US into growth again.

But that did come at a price - the US government went into deficit until Bill Clinton (another Democrat) balanced the budget in his second term.

Then, all that was undone by cowboy Bush Jr (Republican) who started wars with inadequate resources and then found himself mired in other people's intractable problems. He put the government in a worse financial situation than when Clinton took over.
