What about rice?

In Toronto, Can$7.99 for 15 pounds - on offer. Regular price is Can$11 ~ $13 for that qty. With exchange rate (S$14 ~ S$17 per 7 kg), still cheaper than Sg, an Asian country where rice is a daily stape. Something seriously wrong here.

Cheers!

I think it goes both ways as I recall buying fruits in the States. Pineapples and bananas are more expensive over there.

Pineapples and bananas are tropical fruits and I'd expect them to be more expensive for temperate USA. But rice price was totally unexpected comparing Canada to Sg.

Price of cherries in Sg? - pretty outrageous, but many S'poreans can easily afford them. My kid loves blueberries and cherries, and I find these extremely expensive in Sg. But bananas in Canada are priced around 55 ct/lb - very affordable. ANyway, mine is a small family and I am quite free on spending on food (except for fancy restaurants) and cooking for the family doesn't cost an arm and a leg for us.

Cheers!

I agree there seems to be some anomalies here. In Philippines for example, being an exporter of sugar, the price of sugar there is more expensive than the States.

It also depends on quality of the rice as I find in the States, the rice there is slightly different. Maybe they get them from a different source?

I haven't been to the Philippines, from what I hear, it is quite a fucked up country. Don't know about the rice in US, but in Canada, we get a choice. IN the US, ya get what kind of rice? Uncle Ben's? They suck don't they? In Canada , most in the chinese community buy Thai jasmine rice.

When I went on my honeymoon in Sri Lanka (early nineties), thought I'd treat meself to Sri Lankan crabs - guess what, we couldn't find any! They're all exported!!! Finally, managed to find crabs at a Chinese restaurant - but they cook it differently from the chilli crabs we grew accustomed to.

Cheers!

walk into any whole foods or 99 ranch stores in california and you'll find all kinds of rice bags, mostly imported, but affordable. most popular among ethnic chinese and vietnamese is jasmine rice. the most sought after jasmine is imported from thailand. ethnic indians love basmati, and there are all kinds of basmati at whole foods. costco sells bags and bags of jasmine. koreans, taiwanese, and japanese prefer short grain. there are lots of japanese imports although california japanese rice growers sell tons of short grain rice. and then there is the california long grain, which is used in rice o roni or rice pilaf favored by the armenian and persian communities. chinese restaurants in cal use a low grade of rice not sold in retail.
