I need help - which pickup?

My Toyota Hilux Surf Turbo Diesel has done 250,000 km and hasn't missed a beat yet. I told my mechanic I was thinking of getting a new one, he told me not to waste my money. A 250,000 km Toyota diesel comes under the "low mileage" category. Top end and big bearings will last to 450,000 km before they need to be attended to.

If you service a Toyota diesel regularly and that including the fluids in transmission system... gearbox, rear and front axles etc, it will pretty much outlast its owner.

With a turbo diesel, the only thing you need be careful with is the turbo. You need to warm it up before putting you foot down and let the engine run a minute or so before you turn it off. [or you can install a turbo timer].

Even if it's ill treated, it'll still last more than 100,000 km. The turbo unit costs $1200 to rebuild if it disintegrates.

That's really helpful Sam listening from the owner. One last question but then I don't think anyone could answer is I wonder if the Made in Thailand pickup truck is as good as a Made in Japan pickup truck. I believe yours is a Japanese made truck.

there u have it, vehicles that are proven in the battlefields. personal choice, take the toyota, parts last forever and easily and inexpensive to replace. any neighbourhood garage can service it and the timing belt last for 150K kilometers.

Cool bro another confirmation for Toyota Hilux Vigo. I happened to see this in google. I agree here neighbourhood garage can service liao and also lots and lots of modification can be done here in Thailand.

I believe all Hilux pickups are made in Thailand and the reliability is unsurpassed.

My Surf is made in Japan. The difference is that the specs are higher.. climate control instead of basic mechanical aircon knobs.. nicer upholstery... fancier rims and so on. I doubt if there is much difference when it comes to reliability.

However, my advice if you're buying new is to wait for all car manufacturers to clear their stocks of vehicles that were manufactured this year in either Thailand or Japan because of the earthquake and the floods.

For quality to be maintained, manufacturing needs to run smoothly. The disruptions caused be the earthquake and the floods could well have resulted in stocks sitting around either at the manufacturing plant or at the supplier end which is never a good thing. Cars which were part of the way through a critical process which shut down because of the disruptions may have had to be reworked. Eg.. halfway through the painting process before the machinary came to a halt and everything had to be stripped and resprayed.

Looks like the short listed candidates are Vigo Hilux Champ and Dmax V-Cross. Both 3.0 diesel and 4x4 and comes with 4 door version.

Be warn. This pickup hobby can be very addicting. Too many options and accessories available compare to cars. You can even install a complete sound system on the pickup. :p Thai bengs like to install multiple speakers on the back of the pickup and paste "Rescue carrying a naked woman" decals on the back of the pickup.

Boss, i already know the greatness of a hilux. since i watch news in the late 80s, toyota pickup trucks can be seen carrying militias to the front. even the recent concluded Libyia civil war, can see toyota with jury rigged HMG mounted on the flatbed pouring fire towards enemy position on tv. and who can forget US rangers having their arse kick by somalia militiamen who rode toyota pickup trucks to battle.

someone i know work for toyota pickup division for south asia, every year bonus at least 3 months. maybe it the only toyota division that is in the black now.

Wow that's really a very good point. Never cross my mind. I am looking out now and plan to get it next year around this time or rather about Sep before the next flood season. After all I also need to budget it cos building a house soon. September next year will be my target but could be earlier. So will go around so some test drive for fun la.

My real bro crashed a UN's Toyota Land Cruiser in Iraq/Kuwait desert many years back. It was a total wreck as it flip and turn. He walked out with bruises and a sore back saved by airbags.

Yes I've seen these TopGear old episodes in YouTube this year. It even went through fire and also dropped from a building while the building was demolished by explosives. Amazing Toyota.

But one is incline to get the Pajero Sport as he heard its very comfortable like a car. I will definitely not go there. A truck is a truck, a car is a car. If not flooding it will be use by my maid mostly so I don't think I will kee-siao to zng too much (I hope). Chonburi is a crazy place for auto mod. Sen so many crazy cars from there and also pickup truck. Saw an old pickup truck fully soop-up with doors opening like a Lamborghini and the entire flatbed is a fucking sound system. Really crazy people in Chonburi.

OK, one thing that need to change is the seats. The factory default does not comes with leather seats.

Used the pickup heavily in upcountry and the leather seats are so much easier to maintain.

I am surprised this is not an option by manufacturers. However I am very worried that 3rd party leather upholstery may cheat and not install real leather.
