I am president because of Mahatma Gandhi: Obama
8 Nov, 2010, 08.22PM ,IANS

NEW DELHI: US President Barack Obama on Monday paid his ultimate homage to Mahatma Gandhi -- for guiding him to the presidency of the world's oldest democracy.

"I am mindful that I might not be standing before you today, as president of the United States , had it not been for Gandhi and the message he shared with America and the world," Obama told Indian MPs to thunderous applause.

He said the Nov 6-9 visit to India held a special meaning for himself and his wife Michelle .

"Throughout my life, including my work as a young man on behalf of the urban poor, I have always found inspiration in the life of Gandhiji and in his simple and profound lesson to be the change we seek in the world.

"As just as he summoned Indians to seek their destiny, he influenced champions of equality in my own country, including a young Martin Luther King.

"After making his pilgrimage to India half a century ago, King called Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence resistance 'the only logical and moral approach in the struggle for justice and progress'."

Obama, who said he was profoundly moved by his visits to Mani Bhavan, the Gandhi residence in Mumbai and at Rajghat, the memorial in Delhi that stands at the spot Gandhi was cremated, had earlier described Gandhi as the "hero to the world".

Oh, give me a break!!!

Mahatma Gandhi was a great man but even he was unable to quell Hindu-Muslim animosity. Wasn't he killed by a Hindu radical? Gandhi's message was impt. Alas, after his death india crumbled and till today, 20 percent of pop are considered dalits - untouchables.

Hindu and Muslims are still fighting over a sliver of land for a temple/mosque.

I cannot imgaine anything more degrading than to tell a young child that he has very little options in life because he is born to the wrong caste. Dalits get less edu, less services, less opportunities. They cannot even marry someone from a different caste. This is the worst form of discrimination.

MLK preached no discrimination and that has lead to Obama being able to become a President. However, the dalits are still discriminated to a great extent. I hear it has to do with the religion. The religion is what discriminates.

Gandhiji gave up sex....did O'Bummer??:D Oh dear! O Bummer, bends where the wind blows...when he go to Pakistan, he will says when he was young he was inspired by Jinnah...and when he come to SINgapore, he will say, when he was in Indonesia, when we was so young, he was inspired by LKY was was just across the sea...la mer! ha ha ha

Pakistan came into being under most unfavourable circumstances. Few weeks before independence, anti-Muslim riots broke out in East Punjab and a number of adjoining princely states. The riots which were “long planned and directed from a very high level”, were nothing less than “a war of extermination against the Muslim minority”.1 Soon the riots spread to Delhi, where it became impossible for a Muslim “to move freely without risk to his life”.2 Consequently, millions of Muslims from India were forced to take refuge in Pakistan. The immediate problem of the Government of Pakistan, was, therefore, to provide them food and shelter. It was by no means an easy task for a state, which had literally started from a scratch. At the same time, the planned migration of the Hindus, who controlled the economic resources of the areas constituting Pakistan before independence, crippled Pakistan’s economy.
i think the guy was crazy!personal opinion

Which is why I often tell my Americunt friends that Hussein Obama is one of the best teleprompter readers in Americunt political history. Very good at making hollywood motivational speeches, shit at enacting real change.
