Golf courses, not history, should make way
by Liew Kai Khiun 04:46 AM Oct 25, 2011

The Land Transport Authority's plan to open a major road through Bukit Brown Cemetery, which is of eco-heritage value, has raised debates between conservationists and developmentalists.

One sees the more intangible but longer term cultivation of a collective sense of identity and belonging; the other, the short-term but lucrative demands for growth and prosperity, particularly for this land near expensive residences along Bukit Timah Road.

As the population expands, the contestations for land use will become more pressing, and this debate is crucial in determining the liveability of Singapore for future generations.

While I am heartened by the Government's commitment to "a city within a garden", I am unsure how this can be realised in practice. The approach to Bukit Brown Cemetery seems instead to be turning the country into gardens within the city.

Perhaps, we need a radical rethink of land use in light of the current limitations, and I suggest that Singapore does away completely with golf courses.

According to the Urban Redevelopment Authority, 22 golf courses and three temporary golf sites occupied 88 per cent of the 1,600 hectares of land used for sports and recreation in 2000, or 2.2 per cent of total land area.

To underline the exclusive nature of golfing here, the premium Singapore Island Country Club has four 18-hole courses, a nine-hole course and two driving ranges that stretch from Adam Road to the boundaries of Peirce Reservoir.

All these facilities and land, enjoyed by about 18,000 members.

Although golf courses are located in constrained areas near water catchment zones, military training grounds or flight paths, not only do they occupy huge tracts of land, they are economically unproductive, socially exclusive and environmentally damaging.

If Singapore's policies are based on pragmatism and inclusiveness, golfing should not be considered a practical activity here. Golfers should go to neighbouring countries for their sport.

Given the increasing congestion in public parks like MacRitchie Reservoir and East Coast Park, it is unacceptable that a privileged few have exclusive access to large plots of land in a tiny country with a burgeoning population.

In 1991, plans to convert parts of Peirce Reservoir into an 18-hole golf course were shelved after the Nature Society convinced the authorities of the rich wildlife in the vicinity.

This scenic area has remained a public space and diverse natural habitat that all can enjoy. On similar grounds, if there must be redevelopment in the Lornie Road area, one of SICC's golf courses, rather than the cemetery, should make way.

The recent parliamentary debates put greater priority on cultivating Singapore's soul and on developing a more active citizenry interacting with a more open Government in an inclusive society, as the Prime Minister spelt out when he assumed premiership in 2004.

Singaporeans should ask themselves to choose between saving an exclusive golf course or a culturally, ecologically and historically rich site like Bukit Brown Cemetery, if they are keen on nurturing this Singapore Soul. This is not a difficult choice, even for the wealthy, if we are thinking of wealth and happiness for all Singaporeans for generations.

why aren't golf courses being sacrificed instead if gahmen really means well for the citizens?

they have as a record destroyed:

1. the original NATIONAL LIBRARY
2. the original NATIONAL THEATRE at fort canning and along with it our very own VAN CLEEF AQUARIUM
3. the original NATIONAL STADIUM
4. haw par villa is totally miamed and neglected by pap's bureaucracy and has lost much of it's lustre. and it was originally constructed for free enjoyment for the nation which is rich in histories, folklores and civic education for our young.

very soon, i got a gut feeling haw par villa would be next in pap's destructo agenda. they shall again come up with a set of crap reasonings to credit their money making ploy.

singaporeans as usual is singaporean. most shall not bother about congregating up to save such piece of priceless landmark. they won't bother if a really good tree were to be fallen, or a hawker centre were to be messed up by upgrading or anything that's intrinsically and intangibly very priceless to us.

to most singaporeans, money and more money in our pockets is the MOST IMPORTANT THING.

that's why do not blame the gahmen for their fuck-up unmindful and unconcerned action. they are true singaporeans who only care for DOLLAR & CENTS. the other issues are all irrelevant. :(

they should tear down ISTANA. that's the most valuable goldmine which is grossly under utilised.

This is how Dictator governments rule.. They want to erase the past and start history, starting from them.. That way PAP and LKY can continue lying to the ignorant population that B4 they arrived Singapore was merely a fishing village. No such things as Singaporeans b4 them and no such things Singaporeans die in WW2. The list goes on with how the government is trying to erase our past.

knowledge about our very own history, the forefathers who helped made it what singapore today is very enriching. it's like a superglue that's going to enhance bonding of singaporeans heart to heart.

gahmen keeps emphasis about money for the retirement, insufficient personal funds for medicals and all those are just craps to scare the shits out of us so that we fear to vote them out. by continuing to harp on such monetary illusionary topics, singaporeans have unwittingly become more money-minded realists.

doesn't the gahmen feel that the nation has lost something more valuable and exceeded the magic $ sign?

we lost our hearts....and soon many may even lost their souls. it's all about money. NO MONEY, NO TALK.

what i missed most which is now just a sweet memories:

the old boisterous bugis street with all the noise, lights, transvestites, raunchiness and yes the very good street hawker foods. bugis as we know it today is totally DEAD!!

chinatown is another brain-dead place. they try to re-enact a fake street hawker fare. the foods sold are not really authentic but the exorbitant prices are fucking real!!

that's why all these fake-ups created by pap fail miserably. just look at fake GEYLANG SERAI. i can bet u more pontianaks roaming there more than human traffic!

surprisingly, the only REAL attraction seems to be LITTLE INDIA. let's hope the pap doesn't mess that up. oh ya! they already did. TEKKA MARKET is different fr the original tekka where very cheap and economical groceries could be bought.

Where's the new National Stadium btw?

no idea. near to marina where the IR is maybe?

then the pap held national day at the marina floating stage. fuck!! how many viewers can that take comparing to our iconic old NATIONSAL STADIUM?

u guys wanna know why they held it there? to show off our commercial skylines and MARINA SANDS 3-incense-liked IR to the world. u think really NDP for the nation? it was a showoff to the world!

if continue holding in the bigger capacity national stadium, it'd be a blank sky to showoff to the world.

Lucky Plaza, Mustafa and Peninsula should go. I hate Pinoys and Mamas and Myanmamas LOL

u forgetting pap loves FTs more than local talents LTs?

wan qing yuan's history is FT's so they preserved and willing spend lavishly on it. Bt Brown is LT's. therefore it has to go.

Have you asked Chee Soon Juan? Maybe he knows a thing or two. :)

the things he knows is for the bigger BAD nor for the better GOOD. chee's old man bequeathed him a bungalow near there and chee donated it to the pap. maybe that bungalow should be archived into WAN CHEE YUAN.

when this question was posed to the pap, their excuse was really simple. the lands occupied by the golf courses CANNOT be put into practical use.

observe the reasoning here. how are citizens gonna argue on that? for every of pap's actions, they already got all the backing up reasoning. if we were to think with our hearts, u shall ve this throbbing feeling in our conscience that they are terribly wrong.

remember. once they tried to ruin pulau ubin and turned it into some money spinner. in the end, nature lovers activists fought for it and the plan was dropped. so now where are the historians activists? all dead is it?

the crux of the matter here is not about BT BROWN. it's about whether pap is really and sincerely mindful about being "servants" to the citizens or just another hypocrital casual remark by pinky that pap actually wanna remain as masters and pap shall remain in its natural characteristic of pay and pay money makers.

so everything else remains unchanged. money is still the main driving force of pap. other than that, nothing else matters more seriously.

then they can bulldoze oxley rise cos orchard is getting really congested too.
