Stay alert and watch your head, for NASA is not sure where its bus-sized satellite will fall when it plunges back to the Earth late next week.

The chances for the dead satellite to hurt someone anywhere on the planet are 1 in 3,200, according to NASA.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), once loaded with the humanity's hope in space-exploration, has turned into an object of horror after it has spent 20 years in the space.

Most of UARS will burn up after re-entering the atmosphere, leaving around 1,200 pounds to spread over a 500-mile-wide area, anywhere between 57 degrees north latitude and 57 degrees south latitude.

NASA scientists on Saturday said that UARS is expected to return to the Earth by Sept. 23, possibly a day before or after, as the six-ton satellite breaks into 26 pieces.

"The re-entry of UARS is advancing because of a sharp increase in solar activity since the beginning of this week,'' NASA said in on its website on Friday.

NASA officials will have little clue as to where the satellite will hit until two hours before its reentry into the Earth's atmosphere, flying at 5 mph.

UARS was discommissioned in 2005 as it ran out of fuel after its 14-year-long mission to study Earth's atmosphere and its interactions with the sun. The $750 million mission measured the concentrations and distribution of gases important to ozone depletion, climate change and other atmospheric phenomena. NASA says readings from UARS provided conclusive evidence that chlorine in the atmosphere, originating from human-produced chlorofluorocarbons, is at the root of the polar ozone hole.

To those looking for fragments from the satellite for additional cash or for a collector's item, NASA has this message:

"If you find something you think may be a piece of UARS, do not touch it. Contact a local law enforcement official for assistance."

5 Weird Examples of Space Junk Hitting Earth
Meanwhile, expect falling satellite next Friday

(Newser) – The 6-ton satellite about to fall on Earth is coming faster than expected, and NASA now thinks it will arrive next Friday, give or take a day, reports Space.com. NASA still isn't sure where the defunct UARS satellite will land, but it thinks the odds of it hurting anyone (even after it breaks into about 25 big pieces) are remote. In honor of the event, National Geographic rounds up five unusual examples of space junk landing on Earth, including:

A woman in Oklahoma felt something brush her shoulder during a walk in 1997. It was a piece of a Delta II rocket, "the only space debris known to have hit someone." She wasn't hurt.
A hiker in Colorado found a still-warm spherical object in a crater in March of this year. It turned out to be the tank from a Russian Zenit-3 rocket.
A beachcomber in Corpus Christi, Texas, found the nose of an Ariane 5 rocket in 2000. NASA officials had to convince the man not to turn it into a hot tub.

I have also read this article which I find it creepy for the fact that it might be possible to target our country. Let us pray for our people’s safety as well as it disappears for no one would be hurt.

However, there are also people who find it funny.

I think this is a serious problem for we should not laugh at it. Well, I couldn’t blame you. In addition, the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, was in Earth's orbit for 20 years. The satellite arrived at what National Aeronautics and Space Administration called "the end of a productive scientific life" a full six years back. UARS is expected to return to Earth soon. By Saturday, the satellite will re-enter the atmosphere. Here’s a proof that I’ve found: UARS satellite pieces have 1 in 3,200 chance of hitting Earth. You could check that out! We should not take it as a joke because we don’t know what will happen due to this fall. Let’s take this as a warning!

Basically, Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite was revolving around the Earth for the last 20 years. In 2005, NASA effectively decommissioned the satellite. To add, the instrumentation on the satellite was still working, but only barely. It was said that the atmosphere of Earth will melt away most of UARS when it passes down and a few big parts are expected to strike land. However, let us not panic because UARS satellite pieces have 1 in 3,200 chance of hitting Earth. Moreover, NASA is providing hourly updates on the status of the UARS satellite. Even with that, the best estimate is that NASA will be able to provide two hours’ warning on the UARS re-entry. Solar activity is blamed for the speed of UARS’s fall. The increased solar activity is also blamed for troubles with communications satellites. Though UARS is falling from the sky quickly, it is just one of the estimated 22,000 pieces of “space junk” orbiting the Earth.
