Huat AH! Singapore is more expensive then Sydney!

You'd have to be very experienced to earn that sort of wages. The norm would be $40 to $60 per hour plus you have to be aware that most trades people in OZ have to pay for their own tools, equipment and transport so the profit from a one hour job could be far less than the hourly rate you pay them.

You also forget that the high hourly rate that tradespeople charge may be advantageous for them but it's a rip off when you're on the receiving end of their bill which is far more likely to be the case.

I used to have to pay AUD400 every time I serviced my car in AU. If I needed a plumber urgently, the after hours call out was AUD200 minimum. A full time maid at your beck and call 24/7 would cost at least $30 per hour, 1.5 times after hours and weekends. Work it out for yourself. If you paid your Indo maid the OZ rate, she'd be earning 10 times what you earned.

As always, the devil is in the details when you make comparisons.

My kiwi partner told me his son enjoying laying bricks for NZ$1 per brick. But he spends most of what he earned on partying and silly girls.

I see Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne all above sinkieland's no7 spot....so apparently we are not there yet. Good exuse for vile pappies to crank up cost of living further....

I have been to some of those Swiss cities & can tell you that they are not as packed as in Spore. In Spore most of us are living like sardines & we have to put up with crowded infrastructure e.g. public buses, trains, poly clinics,...... It's not only the lack of $ but equally important is the lack of quality of living in Spore.

Singaporean friend I know earns enough as a bus driver to bring his family of 5 to Singapore every year for a months holidays with side trips to neighbouring countries. Over here if a bus driver can earn enough to support a family plus travels to Oz every year, then we can compare.

Would you like to pay the sort of bus fares and taxes that enables lowly bus drivers to earn as much as a junior professional?

The working class in Australia are ridiculously overpaid. That's why the country is going downhill rapidly. The low productivity levels cannot sustain these sorts of wages for much longer.

i am going regardless of experience, i can be a truck driver there for all i care or maybe a sales assistant, if i am not happy with my boss, i will sound off my union and get my well deserved compensation, that's the big difference between Aust and sinkie union.

Bloody Aussies!, I am paying my brickie $AUD1.55 per brick and this year, the cost is going up again !!!
If you see 2-course bricks being used, blame the high cost of laying bricks !!!

Those are not silly girls. Silly girls do not know how to spend others' money, they slave for men free.

I need robots

In Australia the $ is more evenly distributed. A reflection of the power structure that exists in the country. The aussie citizen gets a fairer share of the fruits of the country.
Whereas in Spore, the PAP is the one who holds the power & abuse their position to pay themselves with all that $$$$$$$

As far as I can tell there is a minimum wage for all Ozzies and same also for New Zealand. I bet at 8 hours x 24 days they earned enough to support a family of 4. Not here in Singapore.

It's not about me paying for higher transport fares, but is they earn that amount, you bet I am earning the same or more, so it does not matter.

You may have your opinion but they are not shared by those on the minimum wage in either country you mention

Minimum wage increase insufficient and demeaning says SFWU
The Service and Food Workers Union Nga Ringa Tota says a 25 cent increase to the minimum wage is insufficient and demeaning to the 100,000 people in New Zealand who earn on or about the minimum wage.
“Whilst an increase to the minimum wage is positive, this modest increase does nothing to help the financial situation of people who are barely able to survive on poverty wages,” said John Ryall, SFWU National Secretary.
“This increase means the Parliamentary cleaners we represent will now move up to $12.75 an hour. Given that the Minister of Finance, Bill English considers the appropriate minimum wage for a cleaner cleaning his house is $20 an hour, our members wages are still a long way from that. We will be approaching Parliamentary Services later this week to ask them to increase these workers rates to a liveable wage.”

When the minimum wage rises, it will boost wages for all. Not so in Singapore when only the wages of the higher income rises but low wage workers rises minimally.

When the minimum wage rises, it boosts wages for all but the resulting inflation means that when the cycle is completed, nobody is better off than before. In fact, many end up worse off because the country becomes less competitive on the international stage.

This has already happened in Australia and the whole motor industry there will disappear within the next couple of years resulting in the loss of over 100,000 jobs or more.

It costs twice as much to assemble a car in Australia than it does in Europe.

Unless the minimum wage is pegged to productivity levels, decline is inevitable.

If a minimum wage was the panacea for all the ills associated with poverty, then why not set the minimum wage at $200 per hour and fix poverty once and for all.

The African nations could start the ball rolling tomorrow and all the 3rd world countries in the dark continent could join the rich league in 6 month's time.

Same thing that happened in Singapore many years ago. Those companies that are not competitive has already gone under or left the country. Others came in and filled the gap, but did we collapse?

Singapore has not collapsed because the government allows the free flow of labor and foreign talent into the country in order keep overheads low. If it had kept the foreigners out, there would be very few companies left in Singapore and the unemployment rate would be sky high.

So you advocate Australia and New Zealand to do the same? Why are there countries that do not require foreigners to flood their country (Japan for example or Israel).

OZ will be able to keep its head above water because it is a large country with a huge mineral reserves. Same applies to NZ and its dairy exports which drive a big chunk of the economy. Singapore on the other hand has nothing but its people.

Israel has seen a huge influx of Jews from around the world. The population has grown TENFOLD since 1950 which is almost TWICE the rate of Singapore's population growth.

You also have to realise the the Jews are the most intelligent people on earth. The run the world's financial system and hold the majority of the patents. There's no way a bunch of peasant stock sinkies can compete.

Japan was put on its feet by the might of the USA after the second world war and this gave them a head start. They too are superior to the Chinese when it comes to work ethic, innovation and discipline.

Surprisingly these 2 countries has minimum wages.

In Singapore you have to spend money travelling to your NS base often if you are male.

In other countries you dont

Been to australia couple of times.. prices differ across different things? At least their houses wont cost a bomb lyk ours?!

1. Australia need to look at The UK and stop manufacturing mass appeal cars because these cars are better built in low income countries or smart high income countries like Japan and Korea where robots are used to reduce cost and their domestic markets are protected.

2. The cost of manufacturing a Holden is $3000 more expensive per car, despite GM factory more efficient than Toyota Australia. But it is high employment factor, more than 2.5, that kills Holden. Thanks to dracion union rules like giving 4 hours pay for giving blood and 10 additional days union leaves per year, 2.5x sunday shift pay, etc.

Toyota will be leaving in mid 2014, I am waiting for their announcement. Fair work Australia killed Toyota by not allowing unreasonable workers' privileges to be removed. Australia Unions still have this 19th century thinking to kill off employers rather allow the workers' rights and dignity to be removed.
