A BANK executive pilfered $2 million worth of Takashimaya shopping vouchers, selling them online and gambling away his ill-gotten gains.

Yesterday Anthony Lim Boon Liak, 43, was sentenced to 81/2 years in jail after pleading guilty to eight charges of theft as a servant, criminal breach of trust as a servant and money laundering. None of the money was paid back to his employer HSBC, the court heard.

At the time of the offences, Lim was an assistant vice-president and programme manager of customer propositions, wealth management and personal financial services.

His duties included analysing the profiles of customers with assets or a net worth of more than $200,000, and taking charge of marketing programmes.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kung Yong Jin said investigations showed that between February and September 2009, Lim took 4,516 Takashimaya vouchers worth $225,800, which were under lock and key at the HSBC office in Alexandra Terrace.

He was given access to them by his line managers after pretending he needed them to run marketing programmes.

Mr Kung said further investigation showed that between September 2009 and August last year, he changed his method of getting the vouchers, allowing him to acquire more over a short span of time.

Using HSBC's money, he ordered 38,200 vouchers valued at $1.9 million from Takashimaya, ostensibly for ongoing marketing campaigns for the bank. To avoid detection, he collected them from the shopping centre himself, taking them home to look for buyers on websites such as eBay.

Initially, he sold vouchers to a handful of small-time buyers, at 20 to 25 per cent of their true value. Later, he switched to selling them to a big-time buyer at 14.5 to 18 per cent mark-down prices.

He used his ill-gotten gains to buy 4-D lottery tickets and bet on football matches. He also gambled at casinos in Australia, the United States and Singapore, sustaining heavy losses. The bank lodged a police report on Sept 14 last year following his confessions.

Ms Goh Siok Leng said in mitigation that the father of two foolishly committed the offences in desperation to help his financial situation.

He thought he could win some money through gambling and use it to buy vouchers to replace the ones he had taken.

Ms Goh said Lim was remorseful and knew he had brought shame to his family. His years of hard work and promotion had fizzled out overnight due to his stupidity, she added.

District Judge John Ng backdated his sentence to March 20.

Lim could have been jailed for up to seven years for theft as a servant and for 15 years for criminal breach of trust. For money laundering, he could have been fined up to $500,000, jailed for up to seven years or both.

Really sad case. Did it start with the casinos?

Courts Delivery Manager Gets 10 months jail only

.

A delivery manager of retailer Courts who took bribes from three transport contractors was jailed for 10 months today.

Andrew Ong Tiong Chiew, 36, was also ordered to pay a penalty of $631,200 equivalent to the total amount of bribes he obtained from Courts' three main transport contractors.

Courts outsourced its delivery service to S.K. Yap Engineering, Ding Fong Enterprises and Chanroyal Logistics.

Ong, now unemployed, pleaded guilty to 15 charges of corruption involving $244,000 with the remaining 59 offences involving $387,200 taken into consideration. He took bribes between May 2008 and March last year.

Good point. The extra is because there is normally dishonesty involved in such theft as servant crime. It is also harder to catch so must get heavier punishment.

Ups your points.

His immediate bosses should be fired too. Was the President of the Bank sleeping on the job?

Re: HSBC (SGP) Asst Vice President Stole S$2 M worth of Takashimaya shopping voucher

this is a comparable case for stealing vouchers.

SINGAPORE: A former senior accounts manager with MediaCorp Enterprises has been sentenced to three months' jail and fined S$5,900 for taking bribes.

28-year-old Teh Gim Leng had pleaded guilty to accepting bribes worth almost S$36,000 in the form of cash or petrol vouchers from 16 people as reward for choosing them to be winners of a contest held in October last year. Teh could have been jailed five years, or fined up to S$100,000, or both. In mitigation, Teh pleaded for leniency, saying he was driven by greed and foolishness, and regretted his actions. He also asked the judge to defer his jail term for a week so that he could spend time with his sick mother and settle his personal affairs. Teh is now out on a S$10,000 bail. He has been given until Wednesday to begin his sentence.

HSBC Vice President drowned in Singapore River

5 July 2012

A vice president of HSBC Singapore was found dead in the Singapore River according to a report by Shin Min Daily.

The incident happened at around 3.30am on 2 July at the Boat Quay area. Thomas Ang, a 39 year-old VP of HSBC Singapore is believed to have drowned in the Singapore River. His body was found near Fullerton Hotel.

According to one of his relatives, Mr Ang worked from the night of 2 July into early hours of the next morning. It is uncertain how he fell into the River, but his relative said there was a witness at the scene who saw him struggling in the water. However, before the person could reach out to help, Mr Ang was washed away.

Mr Ang reportedly worked very long hours. When his colleagues arrived at his office the morning after the incident, they found his documents opened on his desk, suggesting that he was working right up to the time he drowned.

Mr Ang is survived by his wife and two primary school-aged children. His body was cremated at 3.45pm on 4 July.
