Seventy-nine years ago today (Sept 12), the Japanese officially surrendered to the British, bringing an end to their occupation of Southeast Asia.

This historic moment took place at the Municipal Building, later renamed City Hall, now part of the National Gallery.

Two weeks earlier, on Sept 2, 1945, the formal surrender of Japan to General Douglas MacArthur took place aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Ten days later, it was Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia, who accepted the Japanese surrender in Singapore at 11.10am.

Britain and China were taken aback by the Japanese quick surrender after the atomic bombs. it was expected that the Japs would fight for several more months. Britain and China had their own plans - Britain was planning an ambitious campaign to retake Malaya and Singapore. China KMT govt forces had re-entered Canton province in early August 1945, 7 years after losing it. they were planning to retake Canton city, and then Hongkong.

The Japs surrendered because the Russians started invading Japanese islands.

after the atomic bombing of hiroshima, the japs still didn't wanna surrender despite the tremendous damage it took. it took another bombing in nagasaki 3 days later to really wake up the japs.
