OK for stores to record IC data?
[h=2][/h]

LAST Saturday's report ("Look younger than 40? Show IC to buy alcohol, cigs") said 7-Eleven counter staff can ask customers who look younger than 40 to produce their identity cards before being allowed to buy cigarettes or alcohol. The staff would then record the customers' birth dates in the computer system.
Under the National Registration Act, it is an offence for "any person who, without lawful authority, parts with possession of any identity card to any person".
Does 7-Eleven have the right to record the birth dates of customers in its computer system? Does it possess "lawful authority" to demand ICs from customers? Does its practice contravene the Personal Data Protection Act, which will kick in next year?
How are we to ensure that our data is not sold to telemarketers? And are the computer servers of Dairy Farm Singapore, which owns the 7-Eleven stores, protected against hacking attacks?
The whole exercise sounds extreme. People are already being bombarded with demands to produce their ICs for security, registration and cross-checking purposes. In some commercial buildings, you have to surrender your IC in order to enter the offices. None of these is mandatory by law.
Retailers should not be too liberal with their requests for IC data. If 7-Eleven is serious about backing the Government's fight against teen smoking and drinking, it should stop the sale of alcohol and cigarettes in its stores. Otherwise, it should go back to only checking their customers' ICs to verify their ages.
Information on a person's IC is confidential.

If you are a non smoker you will not have such problem.

Information on a person's ic is confidential? I doubt it. Nothing in sinkieland is confidential unless you are an elite.

You are wrong about that. In Spore, If you visit offices that are "secured" it is common to be asked to surrender a piece of ID in exchange for a Visitor badge. All the info on it is very sensitive. In the west identity theft has become a problem & yet in Spore we are expected to trust some low paid lesser mortal with our IC.

Our ICs are important. If you lose it you have to pay $$ to get a replacement. I think you are also suppose to lodge a police report as proof of the lost:confused: With such a valuable thing I'm surprise that we are suppose to surrender it on request.

Every other government department has captured some information relating to you since your birth. With all of them wired up, any authoritative kaypoh can compile your complete profile in a matter of minutes (or hours depending on how smart he/she is) just by punching a few buttons on a keyboard.

First of all IC should not contain race, religion or any medical conditions. Then it is ok to provide IC data. Most important is email and tel no which should NOT be provided otherwise u will be flooded with telemarketers!!

if need to give ID to enter any premises, normally i just give my old 11B which only have my old address.

Do not buy from 7/11 if you feel that they will sold your information to others...

7/11 must have kana caught and fine so many times by the authority until they scare...

Those who feel that 7/11 should not check the IC... Just go and tell 7/11 you will help them to pay all those fine... I believe they will be happy to take away all those checks...:D

too many foreigner idiots working in security, and 7-Eleven and Starhub. they dunno what 11B is. most of the time, they reject leh! one matlander like tonychat even say only sign-on army can use 11B woh.

think they all sooner recognise a filipino passport than an 11B. must make everyone working in singapore serve at least PES-E NS, then they bloody hell know what an 11B is!

I don't understand loh buy hong Kee show ic buy condom must show Lan jeow or not ?

anyone other than law enforcement cannot ask for your IC. Anyone who produces it for no good reason is a moron. How come coffeeshop never ask? guards also cannot ask for it. but they can deny entry. your choice

Bros, no need to complicate the issue, the reason they want to see the IC is just to verify the age to ensure they aren't selling to minors. Anyways, if the minors really want to get their hands on the merchandise, they will find a way.

For those who surrender identification at security posts, any kind of photo ID will do, not necessary to be IC, driver's licence will do fine.

Cheers!
