Sometimes you wonder what is Roy Ngerng thinking. 20k people who petitioned to shut down STOMP vs the 3 million other Sinkies and this daft thinks Singapore do not have democracy just because a mere 0.7% voice is louder than the 99.3%???? LOL
This is a proverbial old trick in the book to match a petition with the country's population.
A petition is not a general election-type of compulsory voting exercise. You are not likely to get 3 million people to vote on the matter.
The fact that there is no other petition to keep Stomp, or for ST to set up an online poll about this, speaks volumes. ST and Stompers know that it has been an irresponsible angst channel that is not meaningful but to draw ads and revenue.
Contrast that to the Section 377A issue. When the gay lobby set up the "Abolish 377A" on Facebook that drew thousands, the religious conservatives followed with a "Keep 377A" that garnered nearly the same numbers. The government knew it cannot move.
When TKL asked for 10,000 signatures, he knew better than to ask for 3 million. Despite going ahead with few hundred signatures, he got his 10,000 votes although this number was small enough for him to lose his deposit.
Stomp is still around simply because it belongs to the governing monopoly. I can assure you that an SDP website arm for people to talk nonsense and garned 20,000 names would have been shut down by law a long time ago.
