Glitch in 1,280 passports

A TECHNICAL glitch affecting a batch of 1,280 Singapore passports may prevent those holding them from travelling overseas, said Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) last night.

The passports were printed and issued to Singaporeans between May 23 and June 3 2011.

ICA said in a statement that it had discovered printing alignment issues and this glitch affects a security feature in the passports, and may hinder travellers when they go abroad.

A spokesman told The Straits Times that they are contacting those who have been issued these faulty passports.

It has also set up counters in the ICA Building at Kallang Road to attend to those with affected passports.


The counters will be open from 8am to 8pm daily on weekdays, and from 8am to 3pm on Saturdays.

"The ICA sincerely apologises for the technical glitch that has caused this problem, and for any inconvenience to those who are affected," said the spokesman.

People who are unsure if their passports are affected can call the ICA hotline on 6391-6611 or visit its website at www.ica.gov.sg.

But a proper response should be given on why this happened. The Immigration fellas have cleverly and quickly apologise and then moved on.
