A petty thieve case in China, unexpectedly turned into a major hostage taking situation at
Dongguan's shopping district, Guangzhou yesterday afternoon.

A male suspect was seen trying to break the glass display window of an unattended jewelry shop
by security staff along Guancheng Xiangyang Road.

The suspect bolted upon realizing he had been seen. A chase along the shopping thoroughfare
developed with other security staff and shoppers joining in the chase. Along the way, he tried to
grab a woman passersby as hostage but she sprang free.

In desperation, he dashed into Guanyuan Restaurant to take refuge. There were seven individuals
in the tiny restaurant at the time, including a mother and her five-year-old daughter.

The suspect grabbed a sharp object from the dinning table and held all seven hostages which
sparked a two hours standoff and negotiation with police.

Deadlocked after two hours of negotiation, police SWAT term swung into action and arrested the
suspect.

Mother and child were unhurt, but one of the restaurant guest sustained minor injuries.
