A friend's sister-in-law was hospitalized at SGH recently. All in all, she spent 43 days in the hospital, C ward, which include 15 days in the ICU.

Her total bill excluding GST = $54,883.41
Government grant = $42.538.70
GST absorbed by government = $864.13.
Total amount payable after grant and GST = $12.452.71
Incomeshield paid $12,452.71*
Medisave = $0
Out-of-pocket expenditure = $0.

*The patient has riders to cover both the Deductible & Co-Insurance.

can you imagine u.s. hospital absorbing $109k in the bill when patient has little insurance, some medicare coverage and is broke? they easily claim that from their own insurance (for non-payment by patients) and pass the cost down to other paying patients and those with insurance coverage. meanwhile, patient who has little to no insurance, does not pay and is broke files for bankruptcy......again.....and again.
