Hong Kong's ‘father of concerts’ Cheung Yiu-wing dies

Concert promoter Cheung Yiu-wing, the man behind thousands of show stages featuring the city’s most popular singers, died early today. He was 82.
The “Father of Concerts”, for which Cheung was better known, was found unconscious in his home at midnight, his family reported to police.
He was pronounced dead at Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei at 4.08am, police say.
Cheung switched from the construction industry to being an entertainment promoter after the Hong Kong Coliseum was completed in the 1980s and became the primary location for concert performances in the city.
Police say Cheung felt unwell and then passed out at his home in Luso Apartments in Warwick Road, Kowloon Tong, at about 3.30am. His 78-year-old wife sought help from their daughter-in-law, 50, who called police.
Cheung was understood to have suffered from heart problems and hypertension.
Police said an initial investigation found nothing suspicious and an autopsy would be carried out.
In 2007, Cheung was declared bankrupt for failing to settle HK$1 million in fees he owed a law firm.
