You bet. There's certainly some truth to the theory that many homophobes are either repressed or closet gays.

From a psychological angle, we tend to hate most in others what we hate most in ourselves. Fat people look down on other fat people, oppressed minorities discriminate against their own kind, poor people look up to the rich and despise other poor people, etc.

It's also borne out by my personal experience: some of my most virulently homophobic friends eventually outed themselves as gay some years down the road. Some are outwardly effeminate but for religious reasons (usually Christian) tend to repress themselves and marry and have kids but continue their vitriolic diatribe against gays.
