the Chinese are still speaking their dialects in China lah. the Beijing Mandarin is just the common dialect for the people to speak and understand each other. Penang is no longer a Chinese majority city. it is Chinese 40-45%, Malays 40-45%, Others - 10-15%.

apparently it's a mixed bag. HK Cantos were telling me how hideous mainland Canto is. And mainland Hokkiens were telling me that outsiders from the rest of China were invading and butchering the language. Hard to tell what the outcome will be.

And last but not least. Hokkien in Singapore, Malaysia and China are different...
