HK residents set to apply for handout
By Roland Lim | Posted: 13 August 2011 0123 hrs
HONG KONG:
The Hong Kong government has finally rolled out details of how some six million residents can apply for the
HK$6,000 (US$770 = S$925 ) cash handout, promised in the Budget.
The application process begins August 28, with priority given to the elderly.
Applications can be made online or by submitting physical forms.
Those who choose to defer registration until next April will get a bonus of US$25.
Payments will be made directly to the individual's bank account or by cheque, and will not be subject to tax.
The government on Friday defended the five months it took to announce the scheme.
It said it had to work out technical problems in coming up with the most efficient platform, and also to
ensure protection of privacy.
HK Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury K.C. Chan said: "I have said before, I wouldn't
underestimate the difficulties and challenges in setting up and running the scheme.
"During the whole process, we're very pleased to receive the maximum support from the banking
community."
