In PM Lee’s view, Singaporeans must be politically united in order to succeed. That view is both flawed and self-serving.
The time has come for all Singaporeans to take stock of the national situation and current government policies, and decide if the status quo can remain or must be changed. What is needed is not political unity, but critical thinking and the willingness of Singaporeans to take ownership of the nation’s problems and challenges.
Clearly, by calling on Singaporeans to be united under the “same colour”, PM Lee is indirectly calling for a continuation of PAP’s political and ideological dominance. Singaporeans must make up their minds whether the PAP deserves to continue enjoying such dominance, or whether this needs to be changed in the long-term interest of the nation.
What is needed in Singapore right now is not conformity to a singular view of national progress, but instead independence of thought and judgment, and the willingness and ability to rally for change. The old order must be questioned thoroughly and old assumptions examined and challenged. Only then can Singapore progress.
To adopt a conformist attitude at this stage would be tantamount to adopting a defeatist attitude. That is why Singaporeans must reject PM Lee’s comments as out-dated and out of touch.
