Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said that he will be working to make ITE and Poly more "attractive options" for Singaporeans.

He was speaking to reporters at Singapore Polytechnic's graduation ceremony today and he highlighted that making ITE and poly better was part of the education ministry's key priorities.

Addressing the graduating cohort, Heng Swee Keat said that learning does not stop when you enter the workforce. Instead, being able to learn new things is what allows you to succeed.

He talked about how Poly is good for this as students are learning while they are working. This sets the pace for how it should be when you enter the workforce, he explained.

He also said that the education ministry will continue to put emphasis on values education and ensuring that every school is a good school.

This will include making ITE and poly more attractive choices for future generations.

He needs to talk to MOM, ICA first, before shooting his mouth.

It is a good idea to promote ITE but you need to make sure good jobs are available to those grads. Don't just talk cock and say you want to promote the school.

Does the education system has a greater influence in moulding the attitude and character of an individual than the impact from the parents, family and peers?

I think it is the latter. A good education system can excite and interest students to excel. BUT, the prerequisite is that the kid must have the proper attitude.

With maids doing everything for local kids and doting parents over providing, most kids don't understand what is independent or the need to earn your own keep. With a corrupted mind, nothing can excite them to learn a proper trade.

There is actually nothing wrong with the intelligence of ITE graduates, only their attitude. They would complain that their pay cannot even take care of their usual expenses. (which is true because of their doting parents) They would whatsapp to inform that they are visiting the doctor whenever they don't feel like working - no mc would be submitted. They can even disappear from work without informing anyone. Lecturers in ITE joked that the school should employ body guards for them.

This is a typical description of the product from ITE. However, it is definitely has nothing to do with the education system in ITE. It is a social issue. What can the school do if it is accepting people who are there not to learn but to past time? Therefore, can MOE change the image of ITE unilaterally? Another talk cock sing song chap?

does this society encourage independence?no it doesnt, independence is expensive, independence requires paying ur citizens a wage sufficient to survive on their own,in other words a minimum wage, independence requires providing sufficient housing to meet their needs so they can move out....

this country doesnt care about independence,it only cares about streamlining the family unit so that each individual can be paid as little as possible to facilitate the act of doing business......this means communal living, squeezing generations under one roof so that expenses can be shared cause independence is too fucking expensive in this cheaper better faster economy....

University degree 'not vital for success': Khaw Boon Wan (May 5, 2013)

The pappies have an agenda... my guess is they want to push more Sinkies to enrol in ITEs and Polytechnics. Once the wage expectations are lowered, they'll nevertheless still give the job to a Pinoy who graduated from the University of Makati, in order to conveniently deflect any criticism of hiring cheaper workers. They'll claim that the Pinoy has a degree, hence more qualified. If you're not happy, go study some more and/or upgrade your skills to be competitive.

After a while, it becomes very easy to read the pappies' minds and figure out their true intentions.

Yes, a University degree is not vital for success, but it is vital for migrating to other countries.

You don't even need to migrate to other countries. Finding work overseas is much easier with a degree.

Think of the Ah Neh and Pinoy PMETs in Singapore. How many of them are degree holders? How many of them graduated from a vocational college? I rest my case. ;)

spot on! always under the impression that this social issue has taken roots since a generation back.

Agree. The priority is to make Poly and ITE "attractive options" to employers.
