[Health / Medical] - Why taking Vitamin D alone without Vitamin K2 does more harm than good

I posted about this matter on a couple of separate threads in the past few weeks, but this is important (because many Singaporeans take Vitamin D alone without Vitamin K2) enough to have it's own thread. Thanks to another Sammyboy member (can't remember who you are) who also posted about the importance of Vitamin K2.

There are many more articles on the internet about this, but the following 2 articles will give a sufficiently succinct understanding why you should never take Vitamin D alone without Vitamin K2.

2 issues :

#1 The sources you quote are a mixture K1 and K2. Vit K1 (the form of Vit K from vegetable sources such as parsley) has a different function, it's K2 that is required to deal with the calcium released by Vit D.

#2 The low levels of K2 you get from a balanced diet might (or might not) suffice if you do not take Vit D supplementation. If you do, then you'll need additional K2 from supplementation to deal with the additional calcium released from the additional Vit D from supplementation.

Some reading this might think, "in that case just don't take Vit D pills lah, then don't need Vit K2 pills liao!"

Problem is most pple are deficient in Vit D, which causes its own medical problems, such as increasing the risk of cancers. And just stepping out into the sun to get Vit D comes with its own problem : with ozone layer depletion, exposure to UV radiation from the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and cumulative damage to your eyes.

Welcome to physical incarnation. Or as we say in hokkien, 做人真残!!!

Well, no biggy here too i think. All those common foods, especially those veges, are so high in vitamin K, even if their ratios are less than half, consuming these foods throughout the day will still give you adequate amounts of vitamin K.

I wouldn't go as far as saying "most pple are deficient in Vit D". Inadequate levels, maybe. There are studies showing people with inadequate levels being brought back to baseline levels within weeks of supplementing with 3-5000iu per day.

No worries

Just go outside and get active in the sunshine. You'll get all the Vitamin D you need.

Don't be like those silly aunties, cross one small road also take out an umbrella to block out the sunlight. So afraid of 老人斑.
